UC Davis VS UC Irvine

between those two i'm definitely in favor of davis just because of the well-roundedness. I myself wouldn't attend Davis only because I was a little disappointed in the computer science department (my major) when I went - but from what I saw the place was an exciting place to learn.

Nor cal weather is kinda the pits of Cal weather - if weather is as important to you as it is to me - irvine is going to have that on it's side. Davis is also HUGE - so you have to want that feel to a campus, and I know a lot of people do. Its a good 20 minutes to get from one side of the campus to the other (unless, like a majority of hte kids, you have a bike).

Irvine has a good reputation as far as the sciences and engineering - but so does davis. Davis seems to be more into Biological sciences and such (they really emphasize that) but i dont know too much about the rest of their subjects.

ucchris is sippin on that [Haterade![/url]

hahaha. na im not hatin. hell uc davis is one of the schools im applying to for grad school. i just feel davis posters misrepresent their school on cc as something significantly better than it is.

That could certainly be said for posters from other schools...ahem ;)

I usually don't get into the 'who's better" fray, but do need to correct some inaccuracies.

UCD completed a major library expansion just a few years back - and now has over 3 million volumes. UCI needs to catch up - it has 2.2 million volumes...

Also, the UCD Chancellor is not spending $ on the football stadium - that is being funded by private grants, donations, corporate licensing and a tax that the students promoted and voted for.

As far as the US News & World Report, the drop in rankings for that year was based on a reporting error - watch the correction and bounce up in ratings for UCD in the next issue.

omg davis posters are talking about the reporting error and us news ranking again. this is all they ever talk about. even with the correction it will likely still be the sixth ranked uc, possibly the fifth at best. and without question it is the 6th easiest uc to gain admission too, with the 6th ranked freshman admission stats and acceptance rate.

Here are some hard facts for you, courtesy of the National Science Foundation. (in case you've never heard of them, an explanation follows)

2 UCLA $849 Million

7 UCSD $646 Million

14 UCB $507 Million

18 UC DAVIS $482 Million

60 UC Irvine $234 Million

93 UC Santa Barbara $148 Million

109 UC Riverside $112 Million

131 UC Santa Cruz $78 Million

What is this? Rankings of research expenditures from the latest compilation by the NSF.

"The National Science Foundation (NSF) Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges (Academic R&D Expenditures Survey) is the primary source of information on separately budgeted research and development (R&D) expenditures within academic institutions in the United States and outlying areas. Conducted annually since FY 1972, the survey collects information on R&D expenditures by academic field as well as by source of funds. The results of the survey are primarily used to assess trends in R&D expenditures across the fields of science and engineering (S&E). This information is vital for federal, state, and academic planners in order to make decisions on future R&D funding priorities."

This shows what Federal ,state and other agencies think of the different UCs.

(They speak with $$$)

The R&D dollars have pushed UCLA and UCSD up in other rankings, and UCD is not far behind - in fact our $$ continue to rise quickly.

UCD receives more than double the research and development funding than Irvine.

This also translates into more research opportunities for undergrads - opportunities abound at UCD.

More info and research expenditure rankings are at this site:

http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/srvyrdexpenditures/

That's nice.

^^Interesting^^

This was just released that the average GPA and SAT for 2006 admits is higher for UCI than UCD.

http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2006/freshman_admit_profile_2006.pdf

come now, a difference of 25 points on the SAT is not that significant.

at the moment, i'm trying to decide between UCD, UCI (with chancellor's scholarship), and UCSD, with the intent of going on to med school.

AHHHHH! can anybody help me out? this is so hard!

Hahaha the difference of 25 points is probably because UCD has a football team. ;)

doraemon, you really should take that Chancellor's scholarship. You got it for a reason! Don't let that money go to waste. You can get to a good medical school from any of those UCs. Also, UCI's honors program (CHP) seems to hold a lot of potential.

However, if you decide to go to UCD, go for it ;).

HAHAHA
interesting...the graph shows that all the rich people goes to irvine
but than theres also...usc= university of spoiled children

USC? pah, don't speak of that college in my presence! spoiled children indeed! (actually, i didn't even apply there lol)

I dunno about the chancellor's scholarship at Irvine -- i missed the deadline for applying for the honors program (CHP?). But for sure, the scholarship sounds very enticing.

However, UCSD is a top research university with quite a formidable reputation. the only thing bothering me about this is that USCD will be the most expensive to attend. Additionally, i applied to Revelle college, which is reputed to have the most rigorous GE's. (Can anyone speak to this? How rigorous are Revelle GE's compared to UCD or UCI?) Furthermore, I know that if I go to UCSD, i will be forced to seriously nerd things up -- which I don't mind, heh.

Arrright, then there's UC Davis! I visited and definitely approve. The reputation for Life Sciences is solid and despite what USNews says, it is comparable to UCI. I also suspect that it will be easier to get a higher GPA there than at UCSD, not to mention plenty more undergrad internship/research opportunities available. In terms of money, UC Davis is cheaper than UCSD, but more expensive than UCI, since I wasn't given any scholarships/financial aid.

That said, how do I choose? aahhaaaa

o!
i juss found this interesting site although its a lil out of date
http://vtour.ucdavis.edu/

"Including non-California residents, UC Davis offered admission to approximately 22,100 students for fall 2006. This number is not equivalent to the amount of students who will actually enroll, which is estimated to be 4,850, according to Pamela Burnett, associate director of undergraduate admissions.

"Davis is one of the growth campuses, so in reviewing all of our campus' ability to support undergraduates, the chancellor and the planners determined that we could enroll that many students," Burnett said.

Facilities have already been built to accommodate growth, Burnett said. She named examples such as the recently constructed Tercero dormitories and renovated dining commons as well as the new Mathematical Sciences and Sciences Laboratory buildings."

That's all from the associate director of Undergrad Admissions. Key words "one of the growth campuses." I have no idea what that means, could be bad, could be good, but growth is generally a good thing.

^^Growth is a good thing!^^

I think the schools that will have little or no growth is UCB, UCLA, UCSB and UCSC. Partly due to their location and growth limitations.

The benefit of being a "growth" UC campus (whether its UCI, UCD or UCM), is that they can learn from the older campuses (like UCB or UCLA) and improve upon whatever they building on - like housing, facilitites. So yes, growth is good! (unless you are an extreme environmentalist)

UCI is a "growth" campus as well. UCI plans to have 30,000 undergrads by 2010.

Irvine is a very clean and safe and overall a very chill place to live. Beaches are minutes away and where would you rather live? In the heart of Orange County or in the middle of nowhere? Irvine and nearby areas are also home to companies such as Broadcom, Northop Grumman and Blizzard, so you can expect to get great oppurtunities after graduation. UCI is a great school in academics with a strong Biology and CS department. It is also growing in reputation, and according to US News is ranked 10 in all the public universities in the US. Davis is ranked 15.

if you want to look at cows go to UCD, otherwise choose UCI.

quite frankly, i don't care what USNews has to say anymore.

the fact remains that there is more than twice as much federal/state funding for research at UCD than at UCI.
