UC Davis vs. UC Riverside

I am planning on visiting UC Riverside next weekend. I heard their campus is quite nice also. Anyone know anything about this school? Do they have offer good programs? What about the city of Riverside, is it a good area?

If it makes a difference, I am an art studio major. Which school has the stronger art program, UC Davis or UC Riverside?

As far as the campus goes:

I am not a student at UCR; however, of all the discussions I have read about UCR, 'campus' and 'quite nice' were never in the same sentence.

Also, from what I've heard, the city of Riverside is a very concrete, grey area.

I'm not sure about the art major, but as a whole, UCD is strides ahead of UCR, both academically and socially.

I guess Ill represent Riverside then.

Actually Riverside has really good weather and a very nice campus. Its southern CA. The one thing however people mention is the quality of the air; we live near one of the worst smog zones on the planet. However, from my experience, that air never moves onto campus, and actually presents a very nice environment for our environmental science students.

The surrounding area is not the safest place from what I have heard, but I have never experience a problem. Though I really do not have to go off-campus much, except to maybe eat at one of the awesome 3-dollar fat burrito joints nearby.

UCR does have some nice programs, although most are in the sciences, just like at the other UCs. As for the strength of our studio art major vs Davis, I do not think either is that impressive. Thats not really the focus of either campus.

As for comparing UCR and UCD socially and academically, I wont be asinine to comment on any distinct difference since I have not attended both schools. However I will say that UCR is very academically underrated and more of a challenge than many expect. We might not have a brighter entering student body on whole, but that does not mean the academics of the university is any lower.

I don't mean to insult UCR, but they have several rankings in the princetone review that aren't of the good type. I know that rankings don't tell the story, but it does get you thinking...

I haven't attended either campus, but from what I've heard from numerous discussion boards (including this one), UCR is mostly a commuter campus (if you join a frat, then it might not be so bad), while UCD is truly a college town (about half of Davis's population are students); from what I've heard, the "aggie" pack is huge there.

Again, these are not concrete facts, and every experience is unique; so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I'm going to UCR, and even if I got into Davis I'd probably still go to UCR. Davis is a better school academically, my reasoning for UCR is that I want to be in SoCal. I've visited both campuses, UCR with my family, and UCD on a school trip, and both were nice.

UCDavis......100%

The area further down University past University Village isn't the greatest, but I'm not sure I can think of a reason to ever go down that far. If you want a shopping center to go to, Canyon Crest has some stores and food places to visit that you can take the free Crest Cruiser to. The air quality may not be the greatest in Riverside either, but really, Southern California (except for some choice areas) has some of the worst air quality in the nation. Riverside is not just concrete and grey either, but has some beautiful green locations that include UCR's campus.

However, I can't comment on the art program at either UC Davis or UCR. If you can though, I would suggest talking to some current art major students and seeing what they have to say about the program. My goal was just to give you some information about Riverside and the surrounding area of UCR. Good luck, and make the choice that YOU feel is right for YOU!

Just wanted to add that Riverside can get really hot! I think no one pointed this out :D ??

Yea, don't judge everything on rankings. Most of the "f offs" usually get the boot after a few qtrs. I've attended UCI and UCR as an undergrad. and the difficulties between the two schools are pretty similar.

Maybe you should check both school's studio art website to see if anything catches your eye, such as a specific program that might cater to your future goals.

Well good luck,
Sean

syuan you attended uci and ucr? during what years of undergrad?

cuz ive got a lotta questions to ask you if you have ^^

2003-2006: Ucr
2006-2007 Uci

jus visited UCR today
Pentland res was the best and is freaking beautiful
Lothian (sp?) was a bummer, and the air outside of Lothian was extremely bad...
the campus as a whole did not feel to have a good atmosphere

the campus jus seemed extremly gloomy, but Bourn's college of engineering was pretty nice and new too
i did not like the campus

It's been cold and rainy the last couple of days, and that type of weather leads to a more "gloomy" atmosphere. Just curious, what parts of the campus did you and did you not like? Personally, I'm really excited about the new commons, but the new Materials Science and Engineering Building looks pretty cool too (even though I'm not an engineering major).

Lothian wasn't so bad. Pentland was beautiful though. AI gave off a very depressing suicidal vibe. But then again I visited the campus at 11am on a sunday. So I didn't exactly see a whole lot of activity, lol.

On a side note, everybody has been relatively tired (gloomy) at UCR for these past couple weeks, as at the beginning of most quarters as people settle into their new schedules. Normally it would be over, but there has been a flu going around delaying the process. The rain made it less fun too.

And yes, Pentland is nice - often referred to as a "palace" by outsiders.

I guess the weathers been crappy down there too.
