UC Davis vs. UC Santa Cruz

I recently got accepted as a transfer student to both UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz, and I've been going back and forth for the past month. People keep telling me UCSC because it seems a better fit for me: it's a liberal arts school, i'm the artsy hippie type, Lit major w/ a strong focus on creative writing, love the party scene. And come on. They JUST PASSED Measure K. That's like a dream come true for me. :P

But then there's UC Davis. It holds a higher academic reputation than UCSC, so if I decide I want to get a serious job, it may look better on a resume. It's also a family school (quite a few of my family members have gone here). But I've heard that its environment isn't the greatest (the town sucks, party scene is nonexistent). And I feel that UC Davis is more of a traditional, conservative, math-and-science school (REALLY NOT ME). The last thing I want to do is acquiesce to realist conformity just so I will have a prettier resume. But the school still seems great to me. I don't know.

The SIR deadline is June 1st, and I'm running out of time. I really need help coming to a decision. Please help!

Hmmmm, I don’t get the impression that Davis is conservative at all and I thought the town was cute and friendly – it has the highest number of bikes per capita, I think. I’m probably in the minority in my opinion of the town, though. :P

UC Davis has over 100 majors, versus 63 for Santa Cruz. This isn’t an indication of the strengths of any of their departments, but it shows that Davis has more to offer besides math and science (though they have so many majors in agriculture-related fields).

Anyway, it sounds like UCSC excites you a LOT more than Davis, so…go there. Which school would you regret more not attending? And also, isn’t the SIR deadline May 1st?

i did hear that little tidbit about UC Davis and bikes. it’s actually kinda cute. :)

and the SIR is June 1st for transfer students.

definetly pick ucsc if you see yourself in that atmosphere
go to a school where you will feel comfortable!

UCSC is stronger in English, UCD is stronger in Comp Lit, but they are pretty equal. I would go to UCD because it is stronger overall. Also, its not just a science school. It is strong in many humanities and social science areas.

Ugh,
I was an entering freshman with this SAME exact problem.
UCD has the prestiege. UCSC has the feel (I<3measureK!).

but Honestly, i chose UCD.

But look, the stereotypes about UCD are horrible. I thought it was a boring old people town, but when i think about it, its actually pretty dope. They have 420 festivals like UCSC, and its more liberal than you think. Trust me!

definitely go to UCSC, I always tell people that if two schools are very good (UC-Davis and Santa Cruz are both good schools despite what other ppl may tell you), go to the place you feel happiest because you have a better chance of succeeding academically if you are happy.

Santa Cruz sounds like a perfect fit for you. And both the campus and surrounding area at UCSC is far superior than davis.
