UC Davis VS University of the Pacific

Which one is better?

In terms of what?

Academics, athletics, how much the students make after they graduate, overall quality of education, etc.

The stock answer to your question would be to look at US News Rankings and pronounce UC Davis to be the much better choice. But that would do a dis-service. Some points in Davis’ favor are a higher level of academics, a research atmosphere, and about 40 specialized majors that aren’t available at Pacific. Most people consider Davis to be a typical college town — quaint and safe. Many people have the opposite opinion of Stockton.

But Pacific has a lot going for it. It has a beautiful, small campus that you’ve seen in many movies. Its pre-profesional programs are strong, and in the cases of pre-law, pre-dent, and pre-pharmacy, they have semi-guaranteed admission to the professional school to top students. That is one heck of a benefit.

Some other benefits at Pacific … Pacific has quite a variety of NCAA sports programs too. It has a great music school. It has a dedicated Business School whose graduates are well-regarded; Davis’ Managerial Econ department is not really a match. Pacific runs a real co-op program, placing engineering and other students into 5 to 7-month paid internships. Surprisingly, Pacific grads earn slightly more, as per [West Coast Schools by Salary Potential ? PayScale College Salary Report 2012-13](http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2013/west-coast-schools) .

In my opinion, lots to consider.

Well from the US News rankings, UC Davis is ranked higher; but to be honest, it is not that high. It is #38 vs #106. Yeah it is 68 point difference but I don’t think it says much. Especially considering the size of the schools in comparison…

As you can see from my previous answer, I’m open-minded towards both schools. I see advantages at both schools.

But the difference in rankings is very significant. Some employers, internships, grad schools, or professional schools won’t even look at anyone from higher than T-50 or T-25 or T-15 school. Pacific will hurt you there. If we’re going to look further at rankings, look at the WORLD rankings as perceived by international employers and educators. Depending upon the service, Davis is ranked between 40th and 150th IN THE WORLD. Pacific is usually unranked, in a population of 500-2000 ranked schools.

The truly best way to look at it is to look at the career fairs. At T-15 schools, including Berkeley, Standford, Ivies, the absolutely super-top-tier national finance, banking, consulting and science companies go hunting for their future highers. At T-50 schools, including Davis, all better to best national and regional companies come looking, with the exception of the super top-tiers. Apple, Chevron, State Street Bank and the like are all there. At schools like Pacific, most students hire into regional-level companies. With the exception of business, where Davis is weak and Pacific is strong, job prospects out of Davis are more varied and up-ladder.

That of course begs the question, “So why are average salaries slightly hire at Pacific”. There are 2 answers. First, if you look at the fine print, the salary report I cited above is for graduates who never went beyond a bachelor’s degree. A much higher percentage of Davis grads go on to Masters and PHd’s than do Pacific grads. These folks earn much higher salaries later on, but do not show up in the Payscale chart. Second, the majors that lead to very nice career-long salaries with only a bachelor’s degree are engineering and business. Both schools probably have about the same percentage of grads with engineering degrees, but Pacific turns out a much higher percentage of business degrees than does Davis, and it boosts Pacific’s salary results considerably.

Frankly, with the exception of going to Haas at Berkeley, I wouldn’t advise any student interested in a business degree to go to any UC! As a matter of fact, I would advise you to look at the list of majors at both schools. This will tell you a lot.

(1) The world rankings are for research only. Clearly UOP is unranked b/c it does not focus on research and it does not have many PhD programs. There are no WORLD rankings for small schools like UOP. Moreover, the T-50 for US News & World Report mean nothing. What matters is the T-20.

(2) UC Berkeley is not in the T-15. Not even the T-20.

(3) UOP also gets highly acclaimed companies for its job fairs. T-50 does not mean much.

(4) “begs the question” is a logical fallacy. It is not equivalent to “raises the question”

(5) UOP has a higher percentage of its undergraduates going to graduate school & professional school than UC Davis.

(6) Just because UOP offers a higher percentage of business degrees does not substantiate the fact that, overall, UOP graduates earn more than UC Davis graduates. You are assuming too much.

You seem to be sold on U of Pacific. Great opportunities there. Good luck to you.

beebthe1, seriously though, don’t use “begs the question” when you mean “raises the question.”

I almost enrolled in UOP years ago. I live about an hour from UOP and visited the campus and didn’t like it. Didn’t like the area either. The biggest factor in deciding against UOP was the on campus recruiting was terrible. I was allowed to log into tiger jobs with the temporary credentials they gave me and saw the numerous employers. That’s extremely important for me as I love doing internships and was looking to enroll in a proper FLDP program. Some universities aren’t very smart and they allow temp students to log into places where they shouldn’t(OCR for ex.)

Campus life was nice but at the end of the day, when you have little to no on campus recruiting(except retailers recruiting for store manager positions LOL), that speaks volumes about the academics.

Also I had no idea it was ranked #106 in USNEWS. That’s really bad. Whenever you’re ranked below UC Riverside and you’re an older/private school. That’s really bad. USNEWS is much more favorable to private schools. Then again they are both located in the armpits of California (Stockton and Riverside).

I’ll stick to Berkeley/LA/SD/Davis depending where I get accepted. When UOP is recruited by bulge brackets, I’ll change my mind.

OP if I were you, I’d probably go for the pharm program(5 yrs) or consider a real school.

edit i meant 6
