That is wonderful to hear!! It looks amazing from pictures and video we have seen. Grateful for this opportunity.
Oh my goodness, it may give you the opportunity to visit! If so, do not miss it. Bilbao is the secret backdoor to Spain. Normally people visiting Spain would think to fly into Madrid or maybe Barcelona. But for me, I always choose Bilbao. Surprisingly easy (and often cheap!) to fly into, with connecting flight in Amsterdam. The airport is very mellow and really lovely. Very helpful workers. Renting a car at the Bilbao airport is easy if you want to explore. If you want to make it into a total vacation, go stay in the Parador hotels! (if you are not familiar with the Paradores, they are incredibly affordable luxury hotels located in National Historic buildings like castles, monasteries, etc. )
So good to know! Iâve only been to Madrid. We will have to check out those hotels. Thanks for the strong endorsement
My D22 is now adding Cal Poly slo into her top list after researching the school more. She went from a top 3 she was deciding on to now 4 schools. Anyone have any pros or cons to Cal Poly slo vs her other choices of UW, UCDavis or Northeastern? We visited Cal Poly slo last summer when there was no one on campus so she didnât really get a good feel for it. She has now been watching more videos and is definitely more interested. Would appreciate any more input!
My older son whom attended UCD as an Environmental Science major did end up choosing between UCD and SLO. He would have been perfectly fine at either school, but his concerns at the time were:
- SLO had less options/concentrations in the Environmental program than today
- 5- 7 years ago, SLOâs change of major was far more difficult than today
- Ease of travel between school and home. He liked it was an easy flight between SoCal and Sacramento for UCD vs. taking the train from SLO to home. (No Car for first 2 years).
SLO has a wonderful program so it really will depend upon where she wants to spend the next 4 years. Any school she selects, I am sure she will thrive and be successful.
Thank you! You always bring up such great points!
We just got back from our trip to Boston this weekend for Northeasternâs admitted students day. It was awesome and my D22 is even more in love with the campus and Boston! We will visit UCDavis in 2 weeks and she will decide after that. Her waitlist schools could throw a last minute wrench in her decisions!? I am hoping she loves UCDavis in 2 weeksâŠit would be much closer to Arizona vs Boston!
A quick updateâŠmy daughter has done a lot of thinking and is heavily leaning towards Cal Poly Slo now! We visit UCDavis next week so she will decide after that. She has been doing a ton of research on all her accepted schools and Cal Poly slo checks a lot of her boxes. Other than not being in an urban location. Cal polyâs learn by doing reminds me a lot of what we love about Northeastern. We told her with the money we would be saving if she went to Cal Poly she can go visit whatever city she wants whenever she wants! I will keep you posted! Such a stressful time with the May 1st deadline approaching quickly!
Reading this thread from beginning to end just now, I was surprised Cal Poly wasnât initially one of the finalists since she is interested in Davis for an agriculture major. People that have gone to those schools all seem to have liked them in my experience. Only saw UW once for a short time, but I really liked what I saw - reminded me of Berkeley.
My daughter saw Cal Poly last summer when there were no students on campus so she had a hard time imagining herself there. The more she has looked into it the more she is excited about it! She knows May 1st is coming quick so she has spent hours looking into all of her choices the last few days.
We toured UCDavis yesterday which my daughter really liked. Then we drove down the coast and stayed the night near Cal Poly. Did an official tour there this morning and she loved it and is ready to commit! She said she felt sad thinking she would be leaving there after 4 years and hadnât felt that at any campus before! So glad she threw it back in the mix and we went back for another visit! We also drove through UCSB campus on our way to the Santa Barbara airport where she is on the waitlist. She loves the campus at Cal Poly so much more and doesnât think she would change her mind if she got in.
Congratulations to your daughter! I know one happy recent Cal Poly graduate and a very happy current student. Wishing you all the best!
My D22 just got off the waitlist at ucsb this morning but she is in love with Cal Poly slo so I think she will decline her offer! That is the first of 7 waitlists we have heard from.
congratulations on your DD decisions! all great schools - my DD 2020 did go to NUin and loves her school and boston but you have all great options to choose from - best!
My D22 received the transfer option to Cornell this morning after being waitlisted. Iâm sure she is going to love Cal Poly but nice to have this option for sophomore year just in case! Definitely been a roller coaster this year for admissions!
Do you know anything about Poli Sci at UW? My daughter is desperately trying to make some big decisions this weekend. Does your daughter feel safe there? We had a few sketchy encounters when we visited a few weeks ago.
CAmonto3, overall my daughter feels pretty safe. She lives in an apartment 7 or 8 blocks from campus and works at UW as well. When she does need to walk home without her roommate, she is cognizant of which routes are well traveled and relatively safe. She makes a point of asking her supervisor for shifts that end before dark, especially important during late fall and winter.
That said, I feel things have become more sketchy around UW since the pandemic but are slowly improving.
My daughter has one friend who majors in Political Science and really seems to like the program. From what I understand, itâs one of the more popular majors at UW and has a strong reputation with interdisciplinary support from other departments.
Wishing your daughter the absolute best with her choice!
Thank you!
