UC EAP ICLP National Taiwan University, Anyone??

Does anyone know whether it's possible to transfer over some upper division requirements for UC's? I have about 8 more UD units left and was hoping to complete them while abroad in NTU. However, I understand that there's a placement exam. If I get placed lower than expected, does this mean I only take lower division courses and can't transfer over any upper div units?

I would go speak to the director of your schools International Education office. My daughter at UCLA is trying to switch abroad programs (she has been accepted to one) and her concern was getting upper div classes to transfer. In her case they were French classes for a French minor. The director told her that if she places in a lower language class and only takes that level of class that they would not transfer as upper div minor requirements. I would speak to someone in that office at your school. Which UC are you at? If it is UCLA you need to speak to Mr. Vito Grillo. Whether or not classes transfer is up to his office and not your major or minor dept. This is too important an issue to try and get a definitive answer here.

Thanks for your advice, Inquiringmind2. I’m at UCLA as well. That’s what I’m worried about as well. If I do poorly on the placement exam, I’m afraid I’ll have to take all lower division classes, which means I’ll have to rush to complete me major+ upper divs.

Is Mr. Vito Grillo an honor counselor or in the International Ed office?

He is in the International Education office in charge of all study abroad stuff.

I’m surprised there are placement tests for upper division courses. Anyways, there is some “risk” involved which you must consider before apply for the program. Also keep in mind there may be cases where you might not get credit transferred back. Sometimes you may not get the class you want too.

I don’t think Vito Grillo is best person to speak to, your EAP Taiwan program counselor (Malcolm) knows better.

I was referring to upper div French classes only. Meaning that if you take the language placement test (when you arrive in the country) and place into a intermediate level French class (in my daughter’s case) you can only take that level French elective. I am talking about classes taught in French. Those classes might not be considered upper div by UCLA and therefore might not count towards the minor. Generally I think it best to not count on abroad classes counting towards a major or minor. Better just go for the experience and get the units to transfer. If you can take a class that definitely counts for your major or minor than that’s the icing on the cake.
