Hey guys, I'm applying to a couple UCs for material science engineering. Based off assist, I'll have all the general engineering prereqs done (all the math, physics, chem computer science, etc). All that's left are the things not offered here (statics, dynamics, thermo, etc).

What I'm wondering is if anyone can elaborate on whether or not you can finish the rest of your lower division and upper division classes in 2 years at a quarter system school. I honestly think it is possible but really hard since I think I'd have to stack classes and end up with like 5 classes a quarter, but then I'd be worried about my grades and what not.

Yeah its very possible. If you have already finished all prereqs and IGETC, getting out in two years shouldn’t be a problem. Keep in mind thought that at most UC’s you’ll need to take summer session at least once to stay on track.

You won’t be taking 5 classes. Most engineering students take 16 units (usually) which is 4 classes a quarter. You’ll find sometimes you’ll be taking more and sometimes less. But to answer your question, yes its very doable.

PS. Once you send in your SIR, make an appointment with the engineering advisor at the UC and tell her that you want to be in and out within two years. He/she will tell you how to do it in the time frame you want.

thanks a lot for the input man! oh dude I’m in mission viejo too (currently going to saddleback/ivc).

and I guess I wasn’t really considering summer sessions to be honest. looking at uci’s assist and everything, there are about 5 classes that I have to take that aren’t offered. but hopefully things will work out.

I was from Saddleback/IVC too. But you will almost definitely have to take summer sessions at least once if you want to graduate within two years after transferring.

Ps. Statics is offered at Saddleback. Hubbard teaches it though so instead 98% of students just wait…

yeah I was actually in hubbard’s class but dropped it, he was really bad.

today was the transfer day when lots of transfer reps came and I talked to a couple. both ucsd and ucla told me that I had to contact the engineering department and ask but the uci rep told me flat out it’s nearly impossible/ really hard to finish in two years and I should go for three instead (more time to study, internships, etc). I kinda am leaning towards uci and 3 years now, especially since if you do material science engineering there, you can double in mechanical with a couple extra courses.

xelink
yeah I was considering that too, I’ve heard some pretty good things about some of them
