UC Entry Level Writing Requirement

Hey, I got into UCSB a few weeks back but apparently I have to take the analytical writing placement exam.
Does the new SAT not satisfy the requirement? I got a 690 on the new sat for reading/writing portion and I don’t want to waste my money/time on this test.

According to several sources only an 680 and above on the Old SAT exempts you from the APWE. Scores from the New SAT do not.

This is noted on the UCLA website and UC Merced website so I would assume all UC’s are following these guidelines::::

UCOPE has not yet voted about how the new SAT can be used to satisfy ELWR, so at the moment, scores earned on the SAT taken March 2016 or later do not satisfy ELWR.

Did you take an AP English test or take the ACT? There are several ways to pass out of that requirement:

Entry Level Writing Requirement

The Entry Level Writing Requirement is a University of California requirement that all students must fulfill during their first year. This requirement applies to students in all three colleges at UCSB.

Students must satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement in one of the following ways:

score 3 or higher on either of the Advanced Placement English exams
score of 30 or higher on the ACT combined English/Writing test
score 680 or higher on SAT Writing exam
score 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate higher level English A Examination
score 6 or higher on the International Baccalaureate standard level English A1 Examination
receive passing score (8 or higher) on the University of California Analytical Writing Placement Exam
receive a grade of C or higher in appropriate transfer English composition course
pass UCSB’s Writing 1 with a grade of C or higher

@Gumbymom Thanks for the info

@rocket88 nope… :frowning: but thanks for the info

the sat/act stuff satisfies the ENTRY level requirement, but not the GE requirement.

@Versalia Even for the new sat??

“score 680 or higher on SAT Writing exam”

The new SAT doesn’t have an 800 point Writing section. This clearly refers to the old SAT.

@VickiSoCal Yes I understand that but I just thought it’s stupid how the UC is using the new SAT for admission but not for the writing requirement
