UC Essay Formatting Issues! Urgent!

Hi guys,

After submitting my UC application, I noticed on the online application review page that several of my quotation marks and apostrophes had changed into "a??"'s. I made sure to follow all Copy-Pasting instructions from the UC website prior to submitting my application, but this problem still managed to occur.

Will this symbol issue have an adverse effect on the quality of my application?!

Please let me know.
Thanks and best of luck to you all with the admissions process!

Did you already submit the application? I have read about this issue plenty of times on thids website… You could have just fixed the apostrophes directly on the application.

Well, if you submitted it you can’t really do anything about it, but it probably won’t be too big of a deal. I mean it is easily fixable, but there are probably others who’ve made the same errors.

@annieaea Yes I already submitted it and fixed all errors and deleted "a??"s prior to submitting.

@quidditchcat Alright, gotcha. Thanks!

SAME HAPPENED TO ME IM FREAKING OUT. i hate everything

PLEASE check your essays before you submit! But personally, I don’t think this will greatly affect your apps; this seems to be a very common mistake for UC apps.

So I just called UC and was on hold for 45 minutes, they said I could mail it into UC and they would fix it:) don’t worry fellow screw-uppers, there still is hope!!!

@lostinmymind I made the same error, but it only happened in 2 places in each essay, and I never saw them until I submitted my app. Kind of worried, but the UC system just said to mail the essay in when you called?

did you guys save the word document as a .txt file?

@qb1222090 I did not, but the weird part is, only some (2) of the apostrophes in each essay got changed to a?? while some/most were fine. Do you think this is a big deal? Thanks

yeah mine was messed up a ton, it probably doesn’t matter if it’s only in two places but mine was kinda unreadable. Yeah she said just type up an explanation and mail in hard copies of the essays. In your case though, it probably won’t make a difference.

Thank you so much! You have relieved my worry!

Hi I have the same problem. Which address do I mail it to? and what other information should I include besides an explaination and hard copies of my essays? Please help thank you!

look up UC application office address… it should be a PO box in bakersfield. Include your APPLICATION ID on the explanation, and I just put sticky notes on both my essays labeling which ones are which and their word count. When I talked to the official on the phone she wasn’t that specific, but I’m hoping everything gets sorted out in time.

here’s the link to the address [Contact information | UC Admissions](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/contact/)

It’s because your word is formatting with curly quotation marks and apostrophes. You need to change your auto-correct settings to format your word documents with straight marks or change them manually after you copy and past into the text box on the UC app website.

Hi everyone,
As a UC freshmen application reader, let me tell you that we receive formatting problems all of the time. It’s not an issue and will not cause your application to be adversely affected at all. Rest easy. Good luck!

Just saw this on an official document on the UC website:

“Grammatical and spelling errors, although they do not count against an applicant…”

seems like no need to worry :-)
