UC Essay word count

ok so I sent my essay in and my counselor told me as long as I make sure my long uc essay is between 600-630 and all three add up to near 1000 as closely as you can is fine. But now…after I sent it in…people are like no…it has to be 1000 or else. mine is 1052 by the way I think. input please!
P.S…and they let me submit and everything so it should be fine…right?

I was actually told something different from my counselor...the 200 word essays should be no more than 200 words and the 600 word essays should be no more than 600 words

any other opinions?

I thought it had to be under 1,000 words total, because then how do you decide how many words are "too much"? My impression was that you could be flexible with the word counts within the prompts, but that 1,000 was a set limit for it.

But really, I'm no expert on this. I would probably call them first thing on Monday and find out what the situation is.

Like GLM225, my understanding was that 1000 was the limit, and as long as each one was roughly around 200/600 words, then it was fine.

the promt says everything

let me clear it up for you

big essay: no more than 630 words period!!

short essays: should not be more than 205

total length must be 1000 words or less

i feel that they want the big essay to be around 620-630 words and have one small one go a little over(205) and then the last one be around 165.

The promt says total length may not go over 1000 words and the big one may not go over 630 words.

You should call the uc system asap to clear it up

it wont be that big of a deal, but make sure u call.

...so what happens if i went a tad over 1000 total and already submitted? O_O

i thought they meant that they want you to stay as close to 1000 as possible, but if you're like 20 over or under, it's ok.

I need to know this too:
my long essay is 604 words, my 2 short ones are 195 and 206. is that ok?

I had 620 words for long one, 204 for the short one, and 237 for the other one.........i made sure it fit on the application though..so it's all good.
Plus i know FOR FACT that they don't have a "truncating machine" or anything that automatically shortens...what u print is what they will see

rpproductions1987: Interesting, how exactly do you know that?

Well, the thing that jumps out in my mind is that it's a little hard to judge how many words is OK if there isn't a hard limit. If one person writes nearly 1,100 words, they have a significant advantage over someone who stays closer to the 1,000 limit. The only way to make it completely fair would be to have a hard limit.

This is also a quote from the UC online : "Applicants should respond to all three short-answer questions below using a total of 1,000 words."

BUT at the same time, if it didn't notify you that you went over the limit in your online application, it leaves things to question and makes it seem POSSIBLE that going over 1,000 is alright.

Best advice : Just call on Monday. If they say you were supposed to stay under 1,000 words, you have a somewhat valid excuse - The online application didn't stop you from going over the limit.

so did anyone find out the deal with the word count?

I had exactly 630 words on first essay, then 194, and 212 == 1036 words

They usually give those word limits so that you don't end up writing a book and then the poor application reader has to spend way more time on your application than someone else's. I think as long as you don't go over the maximum by more than 5% of the word limit, no one is going to notice.

Yeah. I ended up with 629, 200, 171. Hope that works...
