When I was writing these in the fall, I was told that UCs want essays that are factual, instead of terribly quirky and creative. Is that true?
Especially for those who chose to emphasize on the academic opportunities they took advantage of, is it better to just use the room to lay down all the facts instead of trying to write the more vague essay we do for private schools?

WOW... THIS WAS THE SAME ISSUE I HAD WITH WHEN I WAS WRITING MY ESSAYS FOR THE UC APPLICATION. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT BECAUSE THEY RECEIVE SO MANY APPLICATIONS THAT THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR THEM WAS COMPLETELY IMPERSONAL AND ROBOT-LIKE.

ANYWAY, I CAN'T FIND A GOOD ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION. AS LONG AS YOU ANSWER THE ESSAY PROMPTS ACCORDING TO THESE RULES, I THINK YOU WILL BE OKAY.

Oh And You Shouldn't Try To Be Quirky And Creative... It Never Works Out That Way!!!!!!! You Might Just Come Off As Weird And They Might Not Appreciate That!!!!! Especially If Your Points Get Lost In Your "quirkiness"

SAVE IT FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL'S PROMPT

yeah the UC's are like gigantic meat processing plants.

they don't really comb over what comes in unless its glowing green and smells funny.

write a good, slightly casual and personable essay.

don't be like one of these people that makes up their own sonnet to the adcoms.

i guarantee they won't think it's cute. or they will, right before they place your app in the circular file.

remember you have less than a minute to impress these guys.

someone that i know did some poetry **** and got into ucsc only.

wow moldau, that's harsh

UCs don't really want outlandish stuff; save those for the privates like Stanford or Cornell, because you'll need to stand out in those schools.

The advice I've received from a Berkeley admissions rep is that the UCs want to know what YOU can contribute to the UC (which is especially pertinent to Prompt 2). For the open-ended, most people I've talked with used some sort of personal stories that stayed with the facts and ended with a succinct "moral," if you will.

Bold.
