Anyone out there planning on taking Summer Courses at the UC they decide to attend as a CCC transfer student this Fall 2012? I want to take Summer courses to get a head start on my major requirements for graduation. Would love to chat with other students planning to take summer courses as well. Thanks!

Yes! As a matter o fact I am. Probably…maybe…just one class for my major (politics) at UCSC. And most likely in the second session (End of July to end of August) since I would get the benefits of summer orientation which is mid July. exciting! What are your summer session plans?

If I didn’t already have plans to travel this summer (going to the UK for 3 months), I would’ve definitely tried to complete a few courses this summer at either UCSD or UCLA (not sure where I’ll be attending yet). There are two courses I need to take, Physics: Optics, Electrodynamics, and Special Relativity and Multivariable Calculus, to complete all my lower division requirements so that I can focus exclusively on upper division course work after transferring. I definitely would’ve liked to have taken care of those before I started in Fall. Unfortunately, they would’ve already been completed this spring except that the one and only Physics course was offered at a time that conflicted with a Genetics class I’m taking and the only person teaching Multivariable Calc at my CC is a complete and utter tool. :(

Oh yeah just something of note for anyone that’s considering taking classes for summer. If you didn’t list the UC you’re going to be attending in Fall on LAST YEAR’s FAFSA, you may have to pay out of pocket to take courses ahead of time at a UC. Which, bear in mind, is going to be significantly more expensive than the classes you’ve been taking at CC, around $300 per unit.

great to hear from you guys. good to know about the fafsa glitch. i will check into that after i receive my aid check and they might let me add a school, even this late. but don’t make fafsa changes until after you get your checks, that can delay them.

still waiting to hear back from the rest of the UC schools i applied to. want to get my summer Pell grant, that should not be a problem, but i would also like to get a small loan for my summer courses as well. looks like Santa Barbara may offer loans in the summer—but the deadline to apply might be on April 4th. i will call them on monday and post that info after i speak with them. i am really tired of starving while attending classes, and want to concentrate on getting good grades.

for my history major there seems to be a “Historical Methods” class that is required at most UC schools, and not offered at a CC. sounds dull so i hope to knock that one off this summer. and maybe one more. i have been taking 8 units most summer semesters and that has gone well. then just 12 during the spring and fall semesters. the light course load helps me to keep my grades up, and you know that helps everything.

can’t wait to get out of my CC, bet you guys know how that feels.

I won’t be taking summer classes at a UC for cost reasons, and for the fact that I want to say eff it to school for a bit and enjoy a much deserved summer off :)

You’re allowed to take classes at the UC you’ll be transferring to? Wow, that’s something new to me haha. Anyhow, I prefer attending in the fall instead like the rest of the new transfer students. I seriously need this summer break away from school!

Thanks again Dilapidatedmind for reminding me that I needed to Add a few schools just in case I want to get summer financial aid at my transfer UC. Just updated my FAFSA.

I can understand you guys wanting to take the Summer off, have fun! As for me, I am really looking forward to taking Summer classes. Having worked most of my life, school is like a perpetual vacation for me. Wanted to do a Study Abroad for Summer, but the cost was too high for me. Hope you guys are all checking out the Study Abroad programs via the UC system, they have tons of great programs and scholarships as well. I think the Gilman scholarship is viable, deadline is past for this Summer, but the next Summer we can still apply. Hopefully I can get to France, French is my Foreign Language. Bon jour!

I’ll actually be taking a few classes at my CCC over the summer and working full-time before the Fall.

^ sounds ideal. unfortunately i have 79 units at my CC and maxed my UC transfer units already. otherwise i would do the same thing because it would be more affordable. but i will enjoy getting to a new school as well. maybe you can try one of the study abroad courses next summer? the UC schools have so many wonderful opportunities for studying abroad. my sister spent a year in cairo when she attended UCB. but she was not a transfer. as a transfer, i think summer abroad is probably viable–not a full year.

a year in Cairo? ugh, that’s awesome. and are you sure you can’t take more CCC units? if you’re a CCC transfer, there isn’t a limit on the number of units you can take prior to transfer (there’s just a limit on the number they’ll accept). the only time the number of units becomes an issue is when you’re transferring from another UC or a private university.

^yeah, i already have the maximum units that i can transfer to a UC. have you decided which UC you will attend, or are you still waiting to hear back from a few (as am i)? the Summer language programs are great at the UC’s. we are so lucky to be transferring into such a superb public school system.

got it! I’m still waiting on UCLA and Cal! If I get into either, I intend on participating in their summer transfer programs, which will probably interfere with summer classes at CCC. If I get into Cal, however, I’ll be 45 minutes away, so it won’t be too much trouble. can’t wait! which UCs are you waiting on?

^ same, plus davis. any UC is a great school! which foreign language did you study? if i can get a scholarship to pay for it, i really want to do an immersion in french. i like the idea of taking a summer trip AND earning UC credit.
