I just checked the UCSD Fall 2012 TAG website and they raised the GPA up to 3.5 for CC transfers? Ridiculous for us science/engineering majors...

Does anyone know about any other UC's TAG requirement? I applied for Fall 2011, but I probably won't get in (2.6 GPA when I applied, will be 3.1 by Summer). I really want to get out of CC and transfer already, it's starting to get annoying. All I really have left here is O-Chem & Physics, which I'd much rather take at a UC. Okay, I'll stop before this turns into a rant.

Its even worse if you are a bio major since they only take 200 students because Bio is impacted and TAG does not guarantee your entrance into impacted majors.

Argh. This has been discussed to death. 3.0 TAG for the 35th best national university is really nutty. I mean, UCSD takes a 4.0+ to be safe if you’re applying as a Freshman.

This isn’t going to affect most students–the average admitted transfer GPA is something like 3.4, iirc. If you’re a 3.01 with no excuse (an excuse could be a messed up first semester, followed by three strong semesters), you’re going to have trouble. But if you’re an average UCSD applicant, you’ll be fine, you just won’t be guaranteed.

Ugh, I really wish I didn’t take CC classes when I was in high school, it really messed up my future. I qualify for everything in TAG for my major; No less than a “C” in Biology classes, No less than a “B” in Math & Chemistry classes, 1 year of Bio/Chem Lab, etc. Just the freaking GPA part!

I do have an upward trend I guess, but I’ve come to the realization that my GPA is just too low and I need to start planning for next semester. Looks like another year at the CC…

It’s a huge jump and I do wonder why they didn’t do it incrementally like UCSB did w/a 3.20, but the online TAG applications really created a surge in numbers of TAG applicants so that’s probably a big contributor to it.

It is about time that they raised the TAG for UCSD to a 3.5 gpa. This shows that UC admissions in all levels, freshman and transfer, is becoming more competitive.

I did a quick search for UC Davis’s TAG requirements. They have not posted anything about the 2012 TAG requirements yet. Their requirement is still a 3.1. That said, your chances are a lot better if you are in a position to complete ALL of your lower-division coursework before transferring.

UCSD TAG requirements will now be requiring a 3.5 GPA, according to the Vice President of Student Services at MiraCosta College, located a bit north of UCSD.

Yeah, it’s that bad; What I think is stupid is that they don’t give us priority admission. Why should they take other students from up north first?

I have no idea about UCR, UCI, etc. I just know that UCSD is going to be a total ***** to get into. I just got in as a Communications major with a 3.93 GPA; granted, a GPA that high wasn’t needed, but for UCLA it sure as hell is.

Everything’s impacted; just try your hardest. Seriously.

Just checked today and the TAG for UC Davis now has a minimum GPA of 3.2 for bio transfers.

On a side note… At the beginning of Fall 2010 semester I had a 2.80 GPA and wasn’t given a TAG to Davis because I didn’t meet the 2.9 GPA requirement. I still applied to all the UCs despite not receiving any TAGs. Even though I didn’t meet the minimum GPA I was still admitted to UCD, UCSC, UCSB and UCR. the only classes i haven’t completed yet were both semesters of organic chemistry and one semester of physics.
Don’t give up hope if you don’t qualify for TAG there is still a chance you’ll get in. Just take as many classes as you can (end you fall semester on a high note, i’m sure thats what helped me) and just hope for the best.
Due to family issue I had to drop my Calc 2 class so that revoked my admission status and I’ll be applying again this fall (once again with a GPA slightly lower than the minimum, a 3.16 -_-) So I’ll be stressing with you guys!! haha

Even if someone doesn’t quite meet the requirements to TAG, the new standards might not hurt their chances of admission that much as long as they complete all their prereqs. After all, it means there are going to be a LOT fewer people taking up TAG spots, so, more room for the rest.

I’m glad they raised it. TAG is undermining the whole application process, well- at least at UCSD it is. There were a lot of more qualified applicants that should’ve been offered admission this year but weren’t because someone who skated by with a 3.0 w/ TAG got their spot. (and no, I did not want to go to UCSD).

There’s a big picture here and I’m glad they raised it; better in the long run.

Why is it harder for science / engineering majors to maintain above a 3.5 gpa with your Igetc classes? If you can’t get A or Bs (and sometimes Cs) in Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, Linear Algebra, Diffy Q, Physics, etc you should probably not be a science / engineering major in the first place.
