<p>For most of the UCs that are on the quarter system, the quarter starts on September 19, but classes don’t start until Sept 22.</p>
<p>So, what do the students do from Sept 19 until Sept 22? Do they have activities for the students, or are they just hanging out, getting books, etc?</p>
<p>Move-in dates are usually just before semester starts and the dorms usually have “getting to know you” activities lined up for the new students to get them acquainted with each other and the campus. The “gap” is mostly for people to settle in and get ready; some campus offices may switch to a longer work schedule to accommodate the rush of students. If you are commuting from home, then the semester start date probably doesn’t matter to you.</p>
