UC Financial Aid

I'm really new to finaid in general, so this may be one of those stupid questions:

My sibling and I will both be in college next year at UCs. Let's say that tuition was at $20,000 per student. If our parent contribution is $35,000, would that mean that the school should cover $5,000, or not necessarily?

It depends on your EFC, is it $35k for each or total? Calculate your EFC. If it is anything above getting Pell & Cal grant, you won’t see much other than loans and possibly merit aid if earned

You will most probably just get loans. If your EFC is $35K, there will be no Pell Grant or Cal Grant so unless you get one of the scholarships based on stats, expect loans.

hey guys i wanna go to uci but im an out of state transfer and my costswere 47000 and my efc was 14000. uci only gave me 1900 for the year…is there any way i can get them to lower my costs or give me more money?

By definition, the UC’s require $9k self-help even with a zero efc. With an efc of $35k and two kids in college, the individual efc would be $17.5k. Average COA for a UC is $25-26k. Subtract the required self-help ($9k), from the COA of $26k, and you are left with a delta of $17k, which is your parental efc. Thus, unless you earn a Regents, you should assume you will receive zero grants in the finaid package – just loans.

fwiw: a couple of UC’s offered need-based “Frosh scholarships” this year (as an experiment, I think) in the neighborhood of $250 (UCLA) to $750 (SB).

feddi: If you are OOS, forget about financial aid. UC will NOT award you a grant to cover the OOS tuition. (It would be unfair to the California taxpayers.)
