Hey I'm hoping to go to UCSB next year and I'm kind of curious about funding.

I know either the Cal grant of the Blue and Gold Oppurtunity plan are the major ones for tuition, but I'm considered a foster youth in the CA and Federal governments eyes because for some pretty bad family circumstances I had to live in a group home from ages 13 to 16. (I'm 20 now)

And as a result my Expected Family Contribution to my education is always 0000, I am currently going to a CCC where I get the Pell Grant, Work Study, the FSEOG grant and have taken out $5k in loans in my 2 years here as an independent student.

Anyways I was wondering what kind of funding I should expect when I go to a UC, if any, other than the cal grant or blue and gold Oppurtunity plan, I have a 3.2 GPA (or I will when transferring at the moment it's a 3.13) ill have all pre major requirements and all prerequisites complete, any thoughts on what to expect financially?

Also any tips on how to get more funding (scholarships, grants etc...) at UCSB that I might qualify for so that I don't have to take out loans to pay for school, or if I do minimize them when paying for campus fees, housing and life expenses while going there.

Going off of the aid I will be receiving this year, i qualify for cal grant which is 12,192 my EFC was about 1000 but I was offered almost a full ride, I’m offered 2000 work study and various other grants/ random scholarships that amounted to 25,000. UCSB is estimated to cost 33,000. I was offered a few small loans to make up this balance. I am working this summer so may need to take out a small loan of about 5000. Since your EFC is 0 you will likely receive more aid than I did.

As for earning more money, UCSB has scholarship opportunities that are only available to admitted students that you will be able to apply for once admitted. If you already have health insurance you can waive the insurance included in your student fees which may save a couple thousand. Never buy new text books, don’t get unlimited meal plan, opt for a triple dorm that will save you a couple more thousand, and just be careful about leisure spending.

Did either of you get the Blue and Gold Oppurtunity Plan, or the Regents Grant/Scholarship?

Can you get a triple dorm if you’re a transfer student? I think I’m going to do a double, if I live in the residence halls, but my understanding is that at UCSB there’s only one building that’s residence halls (dorms) for transfer students (juniors) the rest are frosh/soph.

Matt4200, I think your best option is to live in a triple bedroom (2 bedroom apartment) in Santa Ynez. The rent is $521 per month, which is the cheapest of all university-owned housing.

What would be the next step up from that? Because I’m told that’s the farthest and worst housing owned by UCSB unless I was informed wrong. I thought Westgate was supposed to be cheap and the best.

And for the University owned apartments do you have to find roommates or are they just assigned to you?

You were definitely informed incorrectly. A lot of Santa Ynez was recently remodeled, and it’s no further than Westgate.

Westgate:
766/month for 1 bedroom, 2 occupants
or
1223/month for a studio

Santa Ynez:
593/month for 2 bedroom, 4 occupants
or
521/month for triple occupancy

Well info was from someone living there 2 years ago so might have changed thanks for the heads up

And out of those two you’d choose Santa Ynez?

And for the University owned apartments do you have to find roommates or are they just assigned to you?

I prefer Santa Ynez. The only reason I see choosing Westgate over SY is if you want a studio single.

You can find roommates (there is a facebook page to assist with this) otherwise they will be assigned to you after completing an online questionnaire.

How’s the social scene at each?

I received the Blue and Gold plan look at <a href=“Glossary - UCSB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships”>Glossary - UCSB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships;

This is all unofficial
EFC $2759
Cal Grant $12192
UCSB New Freshman Scholarship $1500
Federal Pell Grant $2895
UCSB Grant $4421
Work Study Eligibility $2000
Loan Eligibility $10359

Geez they want you to take out over 10k in loans??

Yes…I really need some scholarships. I know I am going to try and wave the health insurance because I am on my dad’s plan. That is some where around 13 hundred dollars. I need to call them and see if there is any more money that I can get because I recived validvictorian at my school.

I also had the option of going to UCR and they were going to have me take about the same amount of loans out and I would have been living at home.

Wait why don’t you want to live on campus or at the university owned apartments?

And when do you get the official version? lol

@Matt4200 I do want to live on campus, but because I live close to UCR I would have just been commuting to save money. I will be going to UCSB and that is 2hours away so I will be living on campus.

I am still waiting on my official version because I was selected to provide more information to the office of financial aid. Hopefully I will know soon.
