I'm confused. How do I calculate my "UC" GPA??? I don't get the "8 IB/AP credits only". Is there a website that explains how to calculate a"UC" weighted GPA??

You could have just asked this in the other thread...or do a little searching.

But this old CC thread explains it pretty well:

I don't think I'm doing it right. Can someone please help me? (Via PM or something?). :(

Can someone please answer this for me?

When UC's tabulate GPA I know that they only use a limited number of AP/honors classes to give extra GPA points to. However from some sources I hear that this limit is 8 courses (http://www.universityofcalifornia.ed..._profiles.html) and from some sources I hear that it is 8 semesters (http://www.universityofcalifornia.ed...s/honors.html).
So when it says the average high school GPA of freshmen admitted to UCLA is 4.13 does that cap out at 8 courses or 8 semesters? (http://www.universityofcalifornia.ed...iles_ucla.html)

It is confusing to me because it says "...University limits the number of such courses whose grades may be weighted to eight semesters." but then it says "In addition to the preliminary GPA used for establishing UC eligibility..." which makes me assume that the 8 semester limit is only for the UC eligibility GPA. Additionally, where it lists the average GPA's for each university it says "The average high school GPA listed for each campus is computed from 10th and 11th grade coursework, including up to eight honors courses." So I think for the averages it uses 8 courses or 16 semesters of weighted grades. I would appreciate if anyone could clear this up for me.

Anyone? :(

I'm pretty sure when calculating your UC GPA, for admissions, there is still an 8 semester cap. This is, essentially, 2 AP/honor courses each year (2 courses x 4 semesters = 8 semesters).

So 4.17 is equivalent to like a 4.0 (on an unweighted scale?) Because when I calculate my UC GPA I get a 4.0, but that doesn't seem right to me. I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA (with all IB classes). Shouldn't it be higher?

Tell you what, if you'd like you can PM me your courses and grades and I'll see if I can help you out.

Wow..I can't believe how low one's GPA becomes when the UC's mess with it. That makes me so sad lol. Anyway, instead of only giving us 8 pts. for Honors/AP/IB, they should give us more! :( Thanks again vicissitudes for the help.

No problem. Your GPA is still really strong so don't worry about it.

"UC GPA" refers to the GPA you earn while at Cal, so please stop using that term.

Yes, but I think it also refers to the UC system's method of calculating one's high school GPA. A term doesn't have to necessarily mean one and only one thing. But hey, I didn't coin the term. It's been used many times on CollegeConfidential:

As well as by many other sources:

And even by the University of California itself:

But I agree that it's confusing. However, many people simply refer to the UC GPA earned at a UC as your "college GPA" so that makes our lives a little easier.

How about "UC admissions GPA?"
