I am currently a high school senior applying to UC Irvine and UC Los Angeles. Although I have a feeling my application is pretty weak compared to other students for getting into a UC, I just wanted to know my chances of getting into Irvine or Los Angeles.
I'm not sure what my UC GPA would be, but I will post my 10th and 11th grade grades here (we go by semester grading).

10th grade:
History (World Civilizations II) - B/B
English (Honors American Literature) - B/B
Math (Geometry) - C/C
Laboratory Science (Biology) - B/A
Language Other Than English (Spanish II) - A/A

11th grade:
History (US History) - B/B
English (AP English Language & Composition) - B/B
Math (Algebra II w/ an Intro to Trig) - D/C
Laboratory Science (Chemistry) - B/B
Language Other Than English (Spanish III) - B/B

I believe my UC GPA is at a 3.1, but I just wanted to double check if anyone could verify that for me?

I don't have any awards and not many extracurricular activities aside from being a church choir member in 9th and 10th grade for 3 hrs a week for 8 weeks. Also, I sing and play the guitar from 9th-12th grade for 1 hr a week for 10 weeks.

My highest SAT score is at 1840 with a 660 in Critical Reading, 490 in Math, and 690 in Writing.

What are my chances, individually speaking, for getting into UC Irvine and UCLA?

Considering the fact that your GPA is relatively low, UCLA may seem like a really high reach school for you. If you have a low GPA, the SAT and extracurriculars may be of help, but it seems like you don’t have much. You have a better chance at UCI, though that chance too isn’t so high.

Did you get supplemental questionnaire from UCLA or UCI?

Not a great shot at either - hopefully you applied more broadly

good luck.

@Dani2006 No, I did not get a supplemental questionnaire from UCLA or UCI at the moment. Does that mean I have slim to no chances of getting in to either school?

They’re both reach schools. You should try UCSC, UCR, and the CSU’s.

UCLA is probably difficult with your GPA. I would say you have a much higher chance at Irvine. Perhaps Riverside or Merced?

@hghschlsnr - I read Ms Sun Blog… you might want to read the information on how UCI/UCLA divides the number of applicants to 3 categories: accepted, borderline/undecided, and rejected… I have higher GPA than yours. I’m guessing I got the supplement questionnaire because they want more information based on my personal statement. I discussed how I received the last text message from my mom and found out that my parents both died after a few minutes of receiving it. Ms Sun’s blog have more information about admission statistics. How was your essay?

Probably not UCLA honestly, just glancing at your stats. UCI maybe if you wrote stellar essays. UCLA and UC Berkeley are the most competetive UC’s but all the others you’d have an okay shot at. I wouldn’t expect UCLA addmission, no offense, but you can definitely hope for UCI. Best of luck!

As a California resident you may want to go to community college and then transfer. Your GPA is too low and you have a D. Good Luck

Assuming your honors class is listed in UC Doorways for your school, then yes, you have a 3.1 UC GPA. I think UCLA is definitely a reach, but perhaps not Irvine. Did you apply to any other campuses?

@Dani2006 I did my essays about following in my parents’ footsteps for going into the medical field. And my other essay focused on my talents for guitar and songwriting. Do you think these essays are good or are they too cliche?

UCLA- high reach
UCI- low reach

Good luck!

@hghschlsnr… Did u apply to other UC?

@Dani2006 No, I didn’t. What do you think my chances for Irvine are going to be? Slim to none?

I don’t know, but I’ve searched some years back, were they admitted lower GPA than yours. Just pray and keep your fingers crossed.

What major are you applying for? I believe that can also affect your chances of admission. Your gpa is low. But remember that your essays count as well, if you wrote good essays you have some chance.

I know someone who had like a 3.7 GPA and he had a 2250 SAT and average curriculars but bc of a D in one of his classes, UCI was the only school he got into. Since you have a D in one of your A-G requirements, I would say its pretty hard to get into both UCs. Sorry but best of luck on your other schools!
