UC Irvine Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

@Xaevyr you mean like academically or just in general?

I’m guessing in terms of social and academic, environmental parameters, although I’ve lived in CA my whole life, I’ve never been to a UC in person.

@Xaevyr ah. Well, UCI essentially gives off the vibe of being a commuter school. Lots of people go home on the weekends and there generally isn’t too much to do on campus on the weekends anyways. For the most part, if you want to do anything fun, you need a car - or be good friends with someone who has one. You can go to Newport, Fashion Island, Irvine Specctrum, etc. but your options in the local area are kind of limited to things of that sort. Irvine is a beautiful residential area, and it kind of feels like they plopped a college campus in the middle of a bunch of houses. People will usually tell you that if you want to have any social life at all you need to join Greek life - which is and isn’t true. Greek life plays a big part of life on campus, but from what I can tell a lot of people (myself included) make a majority of their friends from their freshman year dorm. A large majority of the student body are bio majors, and most of the rest are engineers of some sort. Most of this sounds negative and I’m sorry if it seems biased - I really do think UCI is one of the underrated UC’s and you will definitely get a quality education if you decide to attend. It does cater largely to STEM majors, so if that is your study of choice, then you should definitely come visit and decide if it’s a good fit for you. But if you’re looking for a buzzing campus with lots of passionate students, it might not be a good fit. Hope this helps!

Biology and engineering majors huh, I’m guessing most students here are either are planning to go to med school or become a engineer, in other words it cater towards professional degrees? I’m seeking more of an academia kind of route, but then again it’s too early to decide. Thanks for the input, I’ll definitely keep this in mind

yes! SO MANY pre-health clubs, sweet lord. best of luck

Right now I am in a health sciences oriented college. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate people who want to be doctors, nurses, PA’s, but I personally don’t want to work in the healthcare field. One of the major reasons I want to transfer is to get away from students who only care about getting into med school

Yeah I feel you. I mean it’s avoidable because the people you’ll be meeting in your classes won’t be pre-health but you’ll definitely meet a lot of bio majors in your time here. But you’re gonna meet those people at any research university. And you’ll have the opportunity to make friends with all kinds of interests

How competitive is it to get in for computer science majors and around what gpa do you think is average for admittance?

I just visited uci Friday. 10/10 would attend

@popota For UCI I heard from a counselor that a 3.5 is competitive for CS.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know what my chances are with a 3.2? I go to merced and had a bad first semester of 2.3, but my past two semesters have been 3.425 and 3.4

You have a pretty good shot of getting in, especially if you have decent ECs and personal statements. I have seen people get in with around a 3.3ish GPA range. Are you a UC-to-UC transfer?

Yes I am. Thanks a lot for the info, I’ve been stressing out as the date comes closer.

Hi, I was wondering what my chances of getting in as a transfer student are!
Transferring from: UCR
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.6. I went up every quarter from winter to fall (3.4 to 3.6 to 3.8 for my average of 3.6)
College EC’s: Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority (philanthropy committee member) and a part time job at the UCR Student Recreation Center
Previous EC’s (high school): ASB, National Charity League, WASC Accreditation Committee, Kiwanis Club of Redlands High School Representative, Sunday School volunteer at a church, Varsity Song Team
Awards: Dean’s List, AP Scholar, High School Honor Roll

Hope anyone out there can clarify for me about the G.P.A. requirement for TAG. I applied through TAG to UCI and my overall G.P.A. is 3.55 (including courses that are not UC transferrable, did not do well on a few classes early in my first year), but my G.P.A. for UC transferrable courses is 3.82 (major pre-req’s at 4.00) for the Psych and Social Behavior Major.

For purposes of TAG evaluation, will they be looking at my overall G.P.A. or my UC transferrable G.P.A.? Thanks for anyone who can clear that up.

uc transferrables GPA only.

Anyone here from GWC? Lol

this week is going to be crazy !!! UCLA and Irvine hopefully will be one the same day

@lindyk8 I actually had no clue. I just kinda hoped. I’d like to think @humbleteen must have had a pretty good essay. But a 3.97 GPA is pretty high, even if it’s no 4.0. That must be like a single A minus haha

@Tristana I mainly go to IVC, but I’ve had classes at GWC if that counts. Haha
