UC Irvine Fall 2015 Transfer Thread

Rejected

Major: Computer Science and Engineering
Prereqs: Finishing this spring
GPA: 3.8
Applied: UCSD (Computer Engineering), UCI, UCLA
Accepted: UCSD (Undeclared), UCLA (Undeclared)
Rejected: UCI

What do I even do…

@iliketodaydream Sounds like the course may not be UC transferable. Look at the catalog of the year that you took that course and see if it says that the course is UC transferable. Not all courses are. Remedial or prep. courses (usually number less than 100) are never transferable, but other courses may not be transferable for some odd reason. For example, at my school trig (Math 142) is CSU transferable but not UC transferable, while nearly every other math course is transferable for both.

Another reason why a course may not transfer is if you got a ‘D’ or less, or ‘NP’, ‘W’, ‘I’, &c. I can’t think of any other reason why the course wouldn’t transfer esp. considering UCR accepted it.

I called admissions and they cited the reason for me getting rejected being that I had a few units below the minimum requirement. Apparently they counted my units wrong for TAG. They have me at 58/60 semester units, but when I notified them that I was retaking a course, and that I would have 63 units, the admissions lady agreed with me and said that I should be over. What can I do about this if UCI actually did count my units wrong? Both my application and TAG application have me at over 60 units as well.

@iliketodaydream - Did they advise you to do anything? They flat out admitted that my units were counted wrong when I clarified that I was retaking a class and would have the correct number of units after this spring term. Now I’m left here not knowing what the heck to do to fix this mess…

@dannybui9 Did admissions advise you to do anything? Let me know what your counselor says or does as it may apply to me also. I’m going to try and see my counselor A.S.A.P as well. Just unbelievable that this could happen honestly…

Especially given how long they took to evaluate applications this year

@JPJordan My transfer counselor emailed her UCI admissions contact and they found out why I was rejected. I’m short of my 60 units for UCI. I took Math 10 (Intro to Statistics) and Psyc 10 (Statistical Methods for Behavioral Sciences). UCI counts these two courses as one course, not separately. So this means when they count these two as one course, I have only 58 units. If counted separately, I would have over 60 units. I got into UCR and UCSB so I guess every school looks at courses differently.

@dannybui9 Yeah, I also ended up calling my counselor and 2 math courses I took were also counted as one. I didn’t apply to any other schools because they all had much more prerequisites and with UCI it seemed that with TAG, I would have been able to get in. All I can do now is appeal and tell them that i’ll earn my 2 units during the summer.

@JPJordan Sorry to butt in with your situation but I didnt know the UC’s allowed summer courses to be counted towards the 60 unit minimum. I always thought it was Spring?

Note, the financial aid message at UCI for accepted students changed! I got:

Your financial aid award is currently being reviewed. Your updated award should be available within the next ten days. If it has been more than ten days, please contact our office at (949) 824-8262.

glad to hear it won’t be super late. Can’t wait to get my aid offer!

@JPJordan It’s crazy how we have the exact same circumstances right now. I’m thinking about appealing as well but I wonder what are the chances of getting in. I’m planning to stay at my community college and transfer to CSULB in the spring, or I can SIR to UCR and just go there.

@CancelOut Yeah everything must be completed by Spring. He’s just giving it a shot with the appeal to see if it gets the okay.

Wow and here I thought I was the only one going through this!!
@JPJordan @dannybui9 I basically took Stat 10 (elementary statistics) and social science 10 (statistics for social science… I knew I didn’t need the second prereq because I had the first one. but my counselor had advised me to always do more prereqs if I need more units. I needed four more units so I dropped by art history and theatre classes just to take statistics for social science thinking it would be more beneficial to me. I guess i should never have listened to my counselor or the uci rep because now I’m short a few units
I’m gonna appeal and see if I can take a summer class…my admissions counselor said I was an outstanding candidate but this little error kinda blew up in my face

Finally got my provisional financial aid letter. It only took two months -_-

Yes, UCI you may be offering me more money than UCLA but you lost me. Glad to know I was being offered a great package though.

@iliketodaydream Yeah I flipped out when I found out about this. I’m going to appeal as well. I’ll have enough units by the end of summer. In the meantime, I just accepted my financial aid from UCR incase this doesn’t work out.

Unbelievable !!!

Rejected … TAG’d with 3.83 GPA

Major: Computer Engineering
GPA: 3.8
IGETC: completed
Pre-reqs: completed

Accepted: UCSD (undeclared), SJSU
Rejected: UCLA, UCI
Pending: UCR

So, I called the admission office and the lady said that, they don’t have any information about my rejection.

@sptrnsfer2015 I’m so sorry to hear… really hope you can get the answer you need.
@luckyname seriously right? I feel bad for everyone who got their answer so late on the boards…I got mine in one of the earlier batches, but I would have driven myself insane if I got it that late, probably would have just sacrificed my major’s good rep at Irvine for the efficiency and friendliness of SD, haha! congrats on LA!

also, it looks like I’m getting a full ride and then some (??) at Irvine? They offered me a 16k university grant, and my net (excluding books and transportation since I barely drive and spend $$ on books) is only $6000… but that’s not including the Cal Grant which’ll be like $12k estimated. I’m pretty low-income, but does anyone know if this is normal for UC’s?

@bmirza991 whoa, your acceptances / rejections are all across the board, looks like it really depends school to school after all! congrats on Berkeley, SD, and Davis! Lame that the calc thing got you DQ’d from the rest. I reckon you’re in better hands anyway.

@Poogboy I have a friend who got a full ride to UCR and then had an extra 8k in grants a few years back. It happens, you’re one of the lucky ones I guess

@poogboy no. the cal grant is IN your university grants. Your net is still 6k
