Hello, I want to know what are my chances of making it to UC irvine (my dream school) or UC davis. My weighted gpa is 3.02 (or something around there) and my SAT score is 1760. The reason why my gpa was so low was because I suffered from depression junior year (I got the worst grades that year... usually I get As and Bs) However, I didn't mention that in my personal statement because we hired someone to give us advice on our personal statement and they said to not write about that... So instead, I wrote about my dad's death for my personal statement. I wrote about how he was killed because he was rushing to get home from work and crossed the road and a car hit him. He died shortly after... I was eight at the time. I remember I saw him dead at the hospital, and my mother crying.. and my younger sister... Anyways, I talked about how I took care of my younger sister ever since I was young because my mom would be so sad about my father's death that she would be out of the house often. And for the second personal statement I wrote about how I enjoyed helping other people at this services for brain injury place. Overall, I want the UCs to know that I am a generally caring person and I want to help others also. However, I don't think my major relates to my personal statement at all...

The major that I applied for at UC Davis is Human Development and my alternate major is Psychology. At Irvine, my applied major is Psych & Social Behavior, and my alternate major is criminology...

I also have a decent amount of extra activities.. however, I don't think any of them PARTICULARLY stand out. Anyways, my awards are from cross-country (winning varsity B...), local art contest, and speech and debate state quals finalist (2). My extra activities are art (for 9th,10th,11th), cross country (10), and ballet (9,10). I also have a decent amount of community service.. over 100... and I have work experience (from one job) and I took MANY elective classes (so right now I have twice as much credits that are required)

umm. however, I do think that the family income right now seems like a discrepancy between my personal statement and my family income as of this moment.. Right now our annual family income is above 100,000. That is because my mom was remarried and now I have a stepfather.. and we have 5 kids.

What are my chances at irvine and davis (or any other uc?) Please help me... TT___TT

For Davis, only 6.48% of people whose gpas were between 3.0-3.24 got in… 53.59% of all enrolled had gpas of 3.75 or higher. For UCI, the avg gpa was 3.81. Honestly, i think your gpa and SAT score low compared to the average of all who get in. But, i guess u never really know until the decisions come out, right? good luck :)

Well I was in a similar situation kind of but not depression. I didn’t want to read ur whole essay but I saw ur sat and gpa. Ur gpa is way below avg for
ucsc too and sat is right on their average. Ur chances don’t seem that great there but who knows essays can do wonders :)

UCSC you might have a chance at. UC Davis and UCI are definately reaches. For other UC’s, you have a good chance at UC Merced and Riverside. Anyways, good luck to you!

The UCI GPA average is 4.01 and UCD is 4.0…your SAT is slightly below average, theirs is about 1800. So those two are definitely reaches but possible, and UCSC will also be a reach cause their average GPA is like 3.7. UCR and UCM i’m pretty sure will take you though. Don’t feel too bad, i mean we’re talking about UC’s here you have to have at least a 3.0 just to be eligible, so it’s a competitive system.

btw, im definitely going to appeal to uci and ucd. My reason is because i want to work with the law (fbi, forensic scientist, etc) and there are fbi and forensic faculties near UCI and UCD. Is that a good reason in my appeal letter?

I wouldn’t really say that should be your main thing in your appeal letter (but feel free to mention it). Maybe submit medical notes that actually document your depression.

Otherwise: UCD and UCI you have about 15-20% chance, UCSC 20-25%. You have a decent shot if you applied to UCR and UCM (i’d say 75% and 85% respectively).

Btw, bumping your thread isn’t really going to help you much. All of the posts are basically telling you the same information. I would just wait for a definite answer when the schools send out decisions. Good luck!

If the appeal thing doesn’t work out (assuming you don’t get in of course), you know you can always transfer to UCI or UCD in a couple years. Just because you don’t go there straight out of high school doesn’t mean you’ll never end up getting a degree from there, so don’t stress too much!
