UC Irvine or UC San Diego for Computer Science???

Where should I go and why??

  1. Have you visited both? If not, definitely visit. If yes, then do any sort of preference?
  2. Are finances an issue? Are the costs the same?
  3. Do you have a direct admit to CS at both schools?
  4. Have to compared the CS curriculum for each school? Are the similarities or differences that would make one better for you over the other?

You will get a excellent education at either school so select the one the best fits you academically/financially and socially. A happy student is a successful student.

Having direct admission to CS is very important at UCSD, since if you enter UCSD without direct admission to CS, it is unlikely that you will be able to major in CS.

UCI is less difficult to get into CS if you do not have direct admission, although it is somewhat selective.

@Gumbymom Yes i visited and both have amazing and friendly campuses. The cost are about the same. Yes I have had direct admission to CS in both schools. And no i didnt really compare the curriculum. I have no prior computer science knowledge and I dont really know what to look for so I dont really know which is best

@ucbalumnus yes i have direct admission into both but i still dont really know which is better and i dont really know what to look for since i have no prior comp science knowledge

@chidori003 Both schools are very strong in CS which is why people aren’t able to give you answers about which would be better for CS. They’re both excellent.

Since you don’t have previous exposure to CS, maybe you could pick the school that is stronger in other areas that interest you. You’re going to take courses other than comp sic over the next four years and many people end up changing majors. Also, many CS majors end up specializing in computer science as it relates to other fields. So choosing the school that fits you best in other areas might give you the answer you’re looking for.
