UC Irvine

I was accepted in UC Davis and Irvine and I know overall davis is ranked higher but I want to attend Irvine as I like it more than davis but the ranking of irvine is higher in CS . I just wanted to know that is it a good choice or I am making a wrong decision in turning down davis. Please reply ASAP.

Where do you live? Is money a problem? Is social life a factor?

I am from india and money and social life are not a problem. I know uc irvine is more of a commuter school but i just cannot explain in words that how much CS course matters to me .I am just looking for education.

Check this website regardiing CS salary: http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2014/best-schools-by-major/computer-science</a>
Both schools are good but UCI has a College dedicated to IT and CS.

@Gumbymom thank you. This link helped me in supporting my decision.

Please comment. Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Please,Please comment

Please reply

Have you had the chance to visit both campuses?

No I have not visited any campus.

Please reply. PLEASE

Go to Irvine, you are making a good choice.
Go to Davis, you are making a good choice.

^

Both are great campuses. In the end it depends what you decide to do. Just because Irvine has a better comp sci program doesnt mean much. I’d choose Davis, but thats just because I live around Irvine and need to get away.

I am hearing from people that Davis is a much better school than Irvine but I like Irvine more and also I do not want to make decision on what I like, I just want to attend a Good university. Please comment on Irvine, Is Irvine a good school for CS?

You have already seen rankings on CS, and I can’t add to that, although I will say the link Gumbymom posted is based on only self reported salaries and only of those who did not go to a graduate program, so there is some self screening in that data. I personally like Davis better than UCI, I have a son who got into both and isn’t really even considering UCI, but he DOES care about the college town, etc, and is not going into CS. One thing I can say in favor of CS and Irvine is that much as I like Davis, it is a little isolated and I just don’t know if it would have the CS interning opportunities Irvine is likely to have. There are ‘internet’ hubs around California and a bunch are in Orange County, in and near Irvine. You might want to ask about internships in the Davis forum though, to be fair, since I don’t really have antennae up for that, since my kids are not aiming in that direction. I have just lived in Southern California, and have a sense of the locations where the big internet hubs are.

But my only concern is quality of education in CS and which of them will be able to give me a better education in CS.

I assure you that the ability to do a hands on internship is a big deal to the quality of your education - and future job prospects. Having said that, I don’t know that you can’t also get internships at Davis, I just know there are a lot of dot com companies around Irvine. I suspect the quality of education in CS is not going to be nearly as different because of your attendance at one versus the other of these schools. I think the effort YOU put into it is going to make the difference, and will dwarf the difference (if any) between school ‘education levels’. They are both campuses of the University of California. Davis is overall rated a little higher by some, but in a sort of catch all rating that isn’t very fine tuned to any particular student’s needs. Rankings are just a way to organize your thinking about the universities. After that, it is up to you.

I am an international student so I can only search about the Universities on internet. I just wanted to know is Irvine considered a prestigious universities in California or is it considered an average university.

It’s ranked 49 for national universities so you can draw your own conclusion from that.
