Uc -> jc -> uc

hi everyone,

I attended a UC and studied biomedical engineering my first year of college. I ended up failing out and having to withdraw from my school. I decided that I wanted to pursue biology instead of engineering and have been taking all the bio pre-reqs at my JC.
I've been getting reasonable grades (some a's, but mostly b's)...my gpa was 1.5 at the UC I was attended and it's around 3.3 at my JC. I'm hoping to transfer to UC Davis for biology in fall '13 but I'm having serious doubts of whether or not i'll even be considered at UC's because of my academic performance at the first UC i attended...also I'll have a lot of units because I essentially redid my freshman year.

So what do you guys think? Do I have a shot at UC Davis? I'll be done with all of the pre-reqs except for o-chem by spring 13....thanks for all of your insight!

Were you able to complete academic renewal for your UC work at your CCC this year, or did they not allow it? You have a decent shot if you keep your GPA up and have a damn good reason in your personal statement as to why you perform the way you did. Assuming you did academic renewal at your CCC to and have completed just about all of your pre-reqs, I can’t see why not. An upward trend in grades helps as well. But aside from that, if your UC classes could not be renewed, I don’t know if Davis would be very forgiving. Your best bet would to be calling UCD directly and asking them about your specific situation. :)

Meet with a counselor and contact Davis admissions directly to talk about your situation.

thanks for the responses…well I spoke to a counselor at my JC today for a couple minutes and she said I have a shot at getting in…I only spoke with her for like 10 minutes because it was a drop in session…she said I would most likely have to explain why I did so poorly my freshman year, other than that she said to make an official appointment to meet with her as she wants to look at my official transcript…but I’m thinking I’ll make an appointment with a counselor at uc davis if possible. Does anyone know if the counselling office at davis is open to JC students? Do you guys know people who failed out of UC’s and were able to go back and successfully complete their education? thanks!

You can call Davis to directly to find out more information and see how they would look at you as an applicant.

Why did you fail out of engineering?

Hi Roy,

That’s a million dollar question and it’s taken me almost a year to really analyze and figure out what went wrong.

Engineering Curriculum is HARD.

I was extremely homesick.

I was not prepared for college level courses at all.

I had a terrible 1st quarter (3 f’s and one c+) I became really depressed and essentially gave up in school because I felt like regardless of how hard I worked I could not get it together.

I can’t put into words how awful it felt to go from being a A/B student to failing out of college…but at the same time I think this has been a blessing in disguise. There have been so many positives to come out of my move back home and to a JC, it truly is the best thing that could have happened to me. I took almost a year to “recover” but it feels like I’ve hit the reset button on my life. I’m a little apprehensive and scared about the thought of going back to a UC but at the same time I’ve learned so much about myself (not to mention my love of biology) that by fall '13 I believe I can make the transition to UC Davis and be successful in my studies.
