I recently got a hold of my high school transcripts for the first time since I graduated and was led to bitter disappointment.

I planned on using my 2 years of language from high school to satisfy the UC language requirement; however, I got a C- as a final semester grade.

To my understanding, a grade of C or better is needed to satisfy the requirement.

Because its my last semester I went to speak to a counselor and he told me not to worry because I got the C- my second semester when taking Spanish 1, but I got As when taking Spanish 2.

However, I am incredibly uneasy with his response because when I looked at IGETC the form says everything most be completed with a "C" or better, it also says the same thing on the Berkeley GE form.

I tried to express that to him but he wasn't really having it. Because the semester hasn't started yet there are no other counselors that I can go see :(

I was planning on taking Spanish 1A next semester anyway, do you think I can "mix and match" using my one semester of Spanish from my CC (which equals one year of entry level high school Spanish) to replace the C- and still use the 2nd year of Spanish from high school?

Or should I petition to take Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B at the same time?

I know I could take the language courses at a UC; however, I am done with all other requirements and would much rather take them at my CC if possible.

I’m with you: I think the C- might be rejected by the IGETC certification people. However, I don’t know a lot about the other fulfillment options.

Since you got A grades in high school Spanish 2, you may want to see if your CC will certify IGETC including that based on completion of level 2 in high school foreign language. UC frosh admissions considers just the highest level completed in foreign language for the purpose of meeting frosh admissions minimums; you may want to check if that also applies to IGETC and transfer admissions.

Note, however, that many UCs or divisions or majors within UCs require higher level foreign language to graduate. You should check what the appropriate level of college Spanish to take would be for you, perhaps by consulting with the Spanish instructors at your CC (or the school you eventually transfer to).

It depends on what your JC states on IGETC. For example, “Two years of high school coursework in one language other than English with a final term grade of “C-” or better” is what my JC requires for IGETC certification in foreign language.

Just out of curiosity, why do you recommend skipping 1A and going straight for 1B?
My goal is to knock out the IGETC language requirement which states that I must take 2 years in high school or 2 college semesters (which is what I might be doing).

@ucbalumnus
But even if my CC were to IGETC certify me, what about the UC campuses themselves? UCB asks you to fill out other required forms, one of them being about the breadth requierments and it asks of the language requirement was fulfilled with a “C” or better.

@Snorlaz
I went to go check my IGETC sheet but it says grade of “C” or better oh well.

You don’t need to take 2 semesters worth of college courses. You only need to take the 2nd semester itself. So it’s perfectly fine to skip 1A and go into 1B if you feel prepared.

I personally skipped the first semester foreign language course and went straight into the second one.

BTW for UCB and UCLA they want 3 yrs of HS foreign language.

2 years of HS foreign language = 1st semesters worth of college foreign lang.
3 years of HS foreign language = 2nd semesters worth of college foreign lang

You should ask the campuses directly if the grade requirement applies to every semester, or just the highest level course completed (and whether +/- matters for high school courses).

So, if I just take Spanish 1B, my requirement will be fulfilled?

That’s interesting, though I find it odd that a counselor never mentioned that to me. Either way, if my understanding is correct, if you are IGETC certified, then you are exempt from the general education requirements at each UC campus. And the IGETC only asks for two years of foreign language from high school.

@ucbalumnus

Thanks, I was planning on contacting the admissions office at UCB when they re-open on Tuesday, looks like I’ll just have to get in touch with more campuses.

@ ocnative? Is that to be admitted or to graduate?

UCB specifics 2nd semester foreign language requirement on it’s assist.org page.

UCLA states "Foreign Language Requirement
The foreign language requirement can be satisfied by one of the following methods: (1) completing a college-level foreign language course equivalent to level three or above at UCLA "
Level 3 at UCLA would be 3rd quarter; equivalent to 2nd semester.

Is 1B 2nd semester or 2nd quarter? Regardless, you can skip lower level foreign language classes and go straight into the ones you need. I’d finish 2nd semester at your college and call it a day.

I think it’s for graduation. I know that for Cal it requires Haas applicants to complete 2nd semester foreign language. So I think that’s what you saw on assist.org. But they don’t accept IGETC…which just states that the equivalency of two years of foreign language in high school will meet the requirement.

So I’m not sure if the equivalency of three years of a foreign language is required to be admitted. Does anyone know the answer to this?

Short version: Yes, the “C-” will fulfill the language requirement for IGETC!

Long version: I contacted Berkeley and they said that I needed to check with the IGETC certification office at my CC, the admissions representative said that if they sign off on it, then it would be okay. So I made an appointment with a counselor who then contacted the IGETC certification office and they said because I got grades that were better then a “C” in Spanish 2 that my “C-” was validated and I was green-lighted for certification! Either way I signed up to take Spanish 1A during my last semester at my community college.

As far as I’m concerned the foreign language requirement is not an admissions requirement, but rather a graduation requirement. However, if you are certified by the IGETC you don’t need to worry about doing the three year equivalent because the IGETC exempts you from the UCs general education requirements. At least, thats what I understood from talking to the Berkeley rep, the Berkeley website, and a few academic counselors.
