[ *] Strengths: I had A LOT of leadership and was active in my school and community through volunteering. Did an internship for a medical supply company. I play 2 musical instruments (but never took music examination test). I had a high GPA, top 2% in my class of 550 students. My standardized scores are average/below average for UCLA so I think that my strongest selling point were my essays.
[ *] Weaknesses: Standardized test scores
[ *] Are you going to UC Los Angeles?: Still undecided; got accepted into UCI, UCSD, UCLA, UCSB, UCR, Pepperdine, Cal Poly SLO, Biola University
[ *] If not, where are you going?: Not sure yet, right not the contenders are UCLA, Pepperdine, (Cornell and USC- IF I get in, probably won’t get into Cornell LOL; iffy on USC)

[
] Weaknesses: low SAT scores and my extracurriculars (I don’t think they were that great)
[] Are you going to UC Los Angeles?: yes!!! SO EXCITED
[
] If not, where are you going?:

[/ul]General Comments/Additional Information:
I looked on this website while waiting for my decision and it did not help my self-esteem one bit!! I was seeing all these people with such amazing stats like high SAT scores and great extracurriculars get denied and I felt like I would definitely be one of them. I guess UCLA thought otherwise!! So definitely don’t let other people’s stats/decisions make you feel like you aren’t good enough! Believe in yourself.

Decision: Accepted[ /size]

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: 2310 ( 740 Math, 770 Reading, 800 Writing)
[
] ACT: Did not take.
[] UC GPA: 4.16
[
] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (4), Music Theory (3), APUSH (5), AP English Language and Composition (5), AP Chemistry (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Not available at my school.
[
] College courses? If so, list them.: None.
[] Senior Year Course Load:
[
] How were your personal statements? Rate out of 10, including the additional comments section: Honestly, my personal opinion was that they weren’t particularly well written (maybe 7/10), but I had several teachers look at them and tell me that they were fantastic (one even saying it “had the potential to be the greatest personal statement ever, and I mean that.”). They were mostly over the subject of my sort of messed up family life, and my own battles with anxiety and depression. In the additional comments, I mentioned the amount of time that I had to dedicate to helping my grandfather struggle with cancer, and how that sort of took up a lot of my time. So not quite good enough to make a grown man cry, but probably good enough to touch an admissions officer’s stony heart. 9/10
[] Supplemental?: I did get a supplemental, I basically used it to explain what I said in my personal statement in more detail, and explain some of my EC’s in more detail.
[
] Any specific e-mails from UCLA other than the supplemental that may be related to your admission decision such as the Alumni Scholarship? If so, list them: Didn’t receive any.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[]** Intended Major **: Neuroscience
[
] Freshman, Transfer, Graduate/Professional or Returning?: Freshman
[] Are you from California? Yes.
[
] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White as the driven snow.
[
] Gender: Male
[] LGBTQ?: No
[
] Citizen?: Yes
[] Served in military? No
[
] Married?: No
[] Orphan?: No
[
] Income Bracket: <25000/yr
[] # of Family Members: 2
[
] Level of Education of Parents/Guardians: Some College (Mother), Bachelor’s Degree/Deceased (Father)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Lots of mental problems in and around me. Also, a pretty extreme upward trend (I got a D in Algebra in middle school, had a 2.8 GPA freshman year and a 3.57 fully weighted my first semester sophomore year, but have had straight A’s since.
[
] Living on-campus? Yes.

[/ul][ b]Reflection[ /b][ul]
[] Strengths: My personal statement and my SAT Score.
[
] Weaknesses: EXTRACURRICULARS. Honestly, I had very few good ones, and couldn’t come close to filling all of the spots on the application. What I did have was sort of unique (marching band, supporting African children in need via a school club, playing tunes for the elderly on most holidays, co-founding a progressive student’s association on campus), but seemed to absolutely pale in comparison to most people on this site. Also my GPA; I thought it would get me rejected for sure, but apparently not.
[] Are you going to UC Los Angeles?: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh decisions are hard, but probably/maybe.
[
] If not, where are you going?: I’m considering UC Irvine since I got into CHP, and I’d also gladly consider Berkeley if I got in (fingers crossed.)

[/ul]General Comments/Additional Information: Really surprised that I got in, especially as I don’t personally know anyone else that did, even among my very high achieving friends. Getting into UCLA is a pretty big honor and I’m beyond elated that I got in. Kind of stings to know that because I got in someone I care about might have been rejected, but I suppose that just means I have to be as happy about it as possible, for their sake. GO BRUINS![ list]

** Decision: Accepted **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2160 (W: 740 M:670 CR: 750)

[] ELC?: Yes
[
] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH: 5 AP Eng Lang: 5
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Nah
[
] Senior Year Course Load: Theater Arts, Honors British Lit, AP Calculus AB, APES (one semester), Speech (one semester), Journalism II
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I’ve won some quill and scroll stuff for yearbook writing, but most of that came in after the app deadline[/li]
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
ASB (school’s student gov/student life org) (Sophomore: Class Treasurer, Junior: Class Presidente, Senior: Executive VP)
Yearbook (Junior: Assosiate Editor, Senior: Editor in Chief)
Co-Founder of Ultimate Frisbee club at school
Minor involvement in Rotary in 12th grade
Mid-sized role in school play my junior year
[
] Job/Work Experience: nada
[] Volunteer/Community service: nada
[
] Personal Statement: Effective (evidently.) This is where I think a lot of applicants slip up. PERSONAL STATEMENTS ARE NOT COLLEGE ESSAYS. I made a post about this. Check it out here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/1872032-what-ive-learned-in-researching-the-uc-personal-statements.html
Peronally, I wrote about coming from a very small school that only offers 5 AP Classes, and gaining confidence through leadership positions.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup and didn’t get anything
[li][ b] Intended Major [ /b]: Environmental Science[/li][
] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Small
[
] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[
] Income Bracket: 125,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): [/li]
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA, Leadership
[
] Weaknesses: Unimpressive class strength but I explained why in my personal statements.
[] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? Accepted to UC Davis, UCSD, UCSC (with honors invite and $8,000 scholarship) and UC Irvine,
[
] Schools you were rejected from? None so far
[li] Schools you are waiting for? Stanford [/li][/ul]General Comments: Current applicants, be very aware of the difference in admission standards between engineering and the regular college of letters and sciences. The engineering school is way more competitive and UCLA DOES NOT consider alternate majors, so it’s engineering or nothing.
