on the uc app…i’m not sure if i should list undeclared or put down a possible major that i migth be interested in…i really want to go to ucla and i’m interested in environemental science and they just opened up that major…shouldi put that down or undeclared…do i have a better chance at getting into ucla by putting environmental or undeclared? thanks!

Choosing undeclared major:

Pros: You can pick your major after you think a lot about it, so there is less of a chance of regret; no need to worry about an impacted major (at first, that is).

Cons: When you DO pick your major, it might be full.

Choosing declared major:

Pros: This lets the University know that you have a goal, vision, plan, etc... they will probably take you more seriously as a prospective student.

Cons: The major that you do pick might be impacted.

In my personal opinion, you can't really go wrong with declaring your major IF you are sure of what you want to major in. The benefits usually far outweigh the risks.

It actually never matters whether or not you put undeclared or a major unless the major is impacted, like bioe at UCSD. I don't think environmental studies would be impacted anywhere.. it's not a particularly popular or rigorous major, is it? Anyway, if you have an impacted major as your first choice, I would just put another prospective major as your alternate and if you don't get into the impacted major, you could still get into your alternate. But if you don't have an impacted major that you want to do, it really shouldn't matter whether or not you are undeclared - majors don't get "full". Only impacted majors get "full" in the sense that I guess they only accept a certain number of people into the program?
