UC Merced to Other UC Transfer

Hi all,

I just completed my first year at UC Merced as a Biology Major with an emphasis in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I am hoping to transfer to another, more reputable UC and plan to apply to all of them except Riverside. I know UC to UC transfer is very tough and rare, but does anyone know the stats or likelyhood in recent years? Tips welcome too! Here are my stats:

Major: Bio
GPA: 4.00
Major GPA: 4.00
EC’s: STEM Tutor and successfully completed internship for a national park. Possibly working in a lab next semester (Plenty of letter of recommendations)
Admission Statement: Not started yet

It’s impossible. Because UCs only accept junior transfers. You have to stay another year. Otherwise you’ll be placed with lower priority vs community college transfers. I wouldn’t count on it.

I’m sorry, I didn’t make it clear that I plan on applying for Junior Year transfer as you mentioned. To be accepted next year as a Junior, wouldn’t I need to apply this year?

Yes, you would apply this Fall 2017 for transfer as a junior in 2018. See the sticky links at the top of this forum for the GPAs of folks coming from community college and who transferred to the various UCs. You have a strong GPA and so keep this up to finish all the major prereqs and try to complete the letter of reciprocity so that you would have as strong case as possible to transfer into a top UC school. Depending on the UC you are aiming for, you may be at a slight disadvantage against community college transfers and so you need to make a strong case for transfer. However, it is often said that UCLA treats UC transfers on the same level as community college transfers. But be wary of UCLA as it is now the most applied to school in AMERICA and so it is ultra-competitive. Good luck!
