UC New admission policy?

Hey guys check this out!! If you're white then you're in luck. If you're Asian then you're out of luck.

New UC admissions policy gives white students a better chance, angers Asian-American community - San Jose Mercury News

OMG my sister :(

This is a very unfair way to judge on admission. People should not take race in account to ANYTHING that just creates discrimination and racism.

Yes. Tomorrow. upper sproul. protest all asians @ berkeley~ all 2398432 asians come.

LOL ONLY 2398432 asians?! NOt even more like 9999999999999 swarm the place!

Hahah… “protest all Asians at berkeley”…

our people will blot out the sun tomorrow. you will not be able to fight in the shade.

i’m honestly a bit apathetic, though kinda shocked too. (My Eth Studs teacher sent us this a few days ago). While it’s not the right way to go about this diversity subject, this may just simmer down that damn stereotype about Berkeley being a place where all Asians go. It’s not a bad thing, but it is really irritating to hear stuff like that. I realize it’s unfair to ALL Asians though, because after all, we’re not all on the same boat in terms of wealth and opportunities.

And xcali, this is solely my opinion, but I definitely do not believe college admissions when they say race is not a factor in admissions (the same goes for wealth too). Of course, I’m not saying all colleges are lying about this, but I’ll say a good amount do so.

Ooops… hhaaha :|. i meant all asians, protest!! @ berkeley :P

What if I’m half asian half white?

good point… CALL THEM

yes. ill bring over the chinese military.

^It doesn’t really affect me since I already got accepted, but I was just curious. I think it’s a terrible thing to do, though.

And I thought stating your race was optional? But I guess they can sometimes tell by your last name.

yea… it doesn’t affect me… but affects my sister :O.

yea… last name pretty much gives everything away… :expressionless: lee, kim, chang, chung, liu, lai, lin, ma, you know… the usual haha.

My last name is totally white, but I’m also half Asian. Except I’m Filipino so my mom’s maiden name actually looks Spanish.

Ya, my uncle was pretty ****ed about this (asian family, both his kids went to Berkeley, I’m prolly going to Davis) and he went to testify at some hearing thing in Sacramento for this.

^
well it doesn’t apply until class of 2012 high school.

ROFLMAO. Lee.

I’m half Asian. Oh geez. >__<;; Good thing I’m mixed!!!

Yaya for interracials! ;P

In terms of being a student there, the fact that Cal was almost half asian was definetly a turn off. Not that I don’t like asians (in fact, many of my friends are asian) but I would rather have a lot more diversity in a potential school.

And guys, all schools are more likely to admit URMs, so shouldn’t it make sense to cut back on ORMS? If the goal is diversity in a school, then Cal’s efforts should be applauded. They have nothing personal against asians, but they just want to assemble a more-diverse student body, which for them means evening out the asian and white numbers (whites are a minority to asians at Cal).

If anything, you guys should be proud of your ethnicity that they have been able to be so succesful, even if that means coming under fire (as a Jew, that has pretty much been our entire history).

Geez, Asians get SCREWED everytime.

But at the same time, I realize that if you want “diversity,” you have to implement some sort of affirmative action. I’m not a fan of AA usually, but I think the Asians at Berkeley is seriously ridiculous. I’m Asian. It’s not that I don’t like Asians. But I would like to go to a school that reflects the general US population, not the population of an international school in China. The excess amount of Asians is the reason why I didn’t apply to Berkeley.

lol, my brother is a high school freshman right now.

this is so gonna mess with his admissions.

thank god, though, I got great SAT scores, and hopefully he will too.
