UC-out of state admissions

soo i'm wondering why there are so few oos kids going to a UC. i know they're public & everything. but do not that many oos kids apply in the first place...?
also, what are the requirements for eligibility. someone was telling me about adding up points or something. & if you're eligible, does that mean you're in at at least 1 UC...?

First, you need to understand that the vast majority of kids (or their parents) want to attend a college within a day's drive of home. Needless to say, there is a LOT of mountains and desert blocking access to the California coasts where most of the UCs are. Second, the UCs are extremely expensive for OOS students -- $45k/yr. For that kinda money, you could get a lot more personal attention at a private college. Third, UC financial aid is not great. With merit aid or great financial aid, a private could be a lot less expensive.

Other than Haas at Berkeley and BME at UCSD, the value just isn't there for most OOS students. As Bluebayou points out, for the same price you can go to a private with more resources and get aid if you qualify, which UC's don't give to OOS students. The UC's are having a financial crisis and cutting profs, classes and resources.

They are upping the number from OOS this year because they badly need the money.

^^Correction, they are trying to up the OOS numbers, but it remains to be seen if the OOS folks will take the bait. (I'm guessing not, particularly in today's economy.)

In addition to Haas, Cal-Eng & Chem are top-notch; Davis has enology; LA has theater/film/dance. Any of which might be worth OOS prices.

I'm sure, the students with low stats will take the bait.

ah, i see. this has been really helpful guys. thanks (:
