UC Personal Statement

I'm just gonna apply in this Nov. kinda nervous right now cuz i do really know how to start my Personal Statement. :(

I am just wondering if i show cover all those moments in my life, which means try to write about 4-5 things under each prompt(kinda like one paragraph/moment) or I should only focus on 1 or 2 things to write(500 words each)? Can I still mention the ECs probably i've list on the application or I should show some totally fresh stuff?

For those of u who had applied before, any suggestion for the PS ?

Thx

Make sure both prompts have a theme. Don't ramble on about this and that. If you want to mention several accomplishments under one prompt, tie them together in a meaningful way. But only list your ECs if they mean something significant to you personally.

Last fall I was overwhelmed with the task of drafting a personal statement because making yourself uniquely stand out isn't easy. & I think the key really is being the star out of the stack-- try not to be like everyone else.

& for the record, both prompts do not have to be 500 words each. You can allocate your word count as you wish. I think there's a minimum of 200-250 words (please, correct me if I'm wrong) for one prompt.

Focus on content as opposed to structure and word count. That's the least you should worry about at this point. What really helped me was looking at examples of personal statements. Go to your transfer center and see if they could provide you with some. The good thing is you have plenty of time to get your creative juices flowing. Good luck!

fashion, Thx a lot!
that right, it's hella hard to make myself stand out uniquely, esp i do think i just have a dull life... :(

btw, besides the two prompts, do u think i should also write something in the extra area? i means the area for u to say something if u don't have the chance to explain it. i'm just not sure if it will be helpful to write sth there or just leave it blank?

what UCs are you transferring to?

Aside from UCLA and Berkeley.... your personal statement is not really important at all.

From what i have always heard the other UCs do not even read them in most cases- i doubt this has changed much

gpa covers everything. don't worry about the essay too much

Malishka31, definitely for Berkeley.

wlfk,
yup. but for some guys, even they got 3.9ish or 4.0, they got rejected by Berkeley. as far as for my major (Econ). i wish GPA covers everthing. but for UCB&LA, probably we need essay and ECs. so just kinda nervous...

For Berkeley, EC's is what puts you over the top.

My guess? Essays you have to read in entirety, EC's you have to just look at and go "Oh... that's interesting." lol

btw, for the rest of UCs, they don't even read it?
then , can i should my preference of UCB? say, i write sth esp about UCB. Then will my application be rejected by other UCs simply cuz i write UCB there?

Work on your grammar before you work on the personal statement...

haha.... yeah, i c. i typed too fast. :(
it should be like "can i show my preference to UCB?" all right, i'm reading a grammar book right now :P

it's a vivid lesson, right?
" DOUBLE CHECK WHATEVER U TYPED BEFORE SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION" :D

i wouldn't. don't show preference to any school. just be glad that you can go to school. =)

it's a vivid lesson, right?
" DOUBLE CHECK WHATEVER U TYPED BEFORE SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION"

yeah...you should probably double check what you type too...

From what I understand, Prompt #2 is the "open-ended" essay, right? I want to write about an obstacle I faced in my life and I how I overcame it.

may I ask what's the EC's mean?

Extracurriculars

how to get the extracurriculars? is it provided in cc or hs?

Extracurriculars are like activities that you do outside of school. These can include clubs, sports, programs, drama/theatre/choir, etc.

is volunteer work also counted in EC? and is the EC really important?
