Applying to: UCSB, UCI, UCSC, UCD, UCR (safe..hopefully?)

Transfer GPA: 3.27

-Will have all pre-reqs complete by Spring 09.
-Barely any work experience - one job, no extra curriculars aside from local basketball team (might not even be one now that I think about it.)
-IGETC will also be finished by Spring 09.

UCSB is my absolute first choice, I really hope I can get in there. I would be very thankful if you guys could chance me quickly and relieve some last minute stress :D.

Thanks.

Decent chance at UCSB, I think. Good luck.

your pretty much locked for all those UCs you mentioned, Berk is a longshot, and hell, UCLA might as well be a toss up.

Applying to: UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCR

Major: Philosophy

GPA: 2.76 (after fall grades go through my GPA will be at LEAST 3.0)

-Major pre-reqs will be completed by spring
-At the end of spring I will have completed 55 units (not 60)
-Not IGETC certified by spring (need 1 math course)

Ethnicity: Mexican

Grade Trend: Significantly Upward

Personal Statement: 9/10

Any chance at all?

a 3.0 GPA for philosophy? i don't think so, to be honest. you are not IGETC certified and you haven't even completed 60 units. those two are pretty much a must have for the UC's, at least the 60 units.

they also are not allowed to factor in ethnicity and UCLA does not read your personal statements (yes, it's true, call me out on it but my experience last year taught me this as it was confirmed by every single UCLA rep I met with).

to OP:

don't be surprised if UCI rejects you. From all of the other phil transfers i met at UCLA, they were rejected from UCI (I did not bother to apply). I'm not saying that this will definitely happen, but it can.

otherwise, you're in a good place. You should have considered applying to UCLA. It is a bit of a stretch, but I think you're right on the cusp of their acceptance range.

xleper17: "otherwise, you're in a good place. You should have considered applying to UCLA. It is a bit of a stretch, but I think you're right on the cusp of their acceptance range."

The schools I'm applying to include UCLA, UCSD, UCI, and UCR.

They really don't bother with personal statements?

I worked so hard on that thing, blah!

Predicthisflick:

oh, i was talking to the original poster.

ONLY UCB is known to read personal essays and this is for only 1/3rd of the applicants. If you're clearly below the minimum, they reject you. If you're clearly above average, you're in. Only if you're borderline will they bother to read it.

They only have 100 readers or so for the applications, they honestly do not have time to read everyone's application essay.

You only have 55 units out of 60. if you don't have 60, you won't get into ANY school. i'm sorry to say this, but this is the case for everyone school b/c you are NOT in junior standing, which is what they want.

To safely get into any UC for phil, you should have at least a 3.3, with the exception of Berkeley which looks for 3.6, on average. Many people with a 3.5 did NOT get into Cal last year, for philosophy. it happens.

Applied: UCSD, UCI
Major: Philosophy
GPA: currently 2.98, will be 3.1 after this semester w/ def upward swing
Exactly 90 transferable units: 60 from 4-year (with a lot of upper division), 30 from CCC for this fall and next spring
Personal statement really strong, no TAG but all pre-req's cleared.
SDSU Study abroad credits from Thailand.

Christ Almighty I need to get into UCSD!
I won't have TAG or IGETC completed, but I have all the prereq's cleared, will I be able to get in with a 3.1? I also will be considered "Priority Admission" since I'm taking 30 credits over 2 semesters at a CCC.

I keep hearing that above 2.9 is a safe bet at UCSD for most majors, is that true?

xleper, you say that they only read the personal statement if you're a borderline applicant. I'm applying to Cal Rhetoric, UCSB and UCSD Philosophy with a 3.73. Am I borderline?

I don't know about Rhetoric. You have to ask some people that majored in rhetoric or at least know someone who applied as that major. The only thing I know about rhetoric is that it has the most reading that a former professor of mine has ever seen.

You should get into UCSB and UCSD without a problem. Not applying to UCLA?

Yames: I think you'll get into UCSD. I wouldn't worry about it too much, they have a 70% acceptance program for transfers. Just make sure you inch your GPA above the 2.9 mark.

awesome thanks. i just hope my having 90 units won't be a problem
