UC President proposes 32% tuition hike

UC President Mark Yudof is recommending a 15 percent increase in in-state undergraduate fees that would take effect next spring, and another 15 percent increase on top of that beginning in fall 2010.

Fee hikes in addition to less financial aid will make things even worse for the state u’s!

Yudof is one of the biggest jerks in college admin.

In PA the in-state tuition at Penn State, Temple and Pitt has been over $10,000 for a while.

Many in California suspect that UCB, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD … will have the stature of Temple in a few years, with the price to match it.

I thought it was already over $25K with room and board. If it actually just brings it to that, it’s not as bad as it could be. Still a bargain at the top schools in the system.

Yudof may be a jerk-- I don’t know about that-- but the UC’s just don’t have the money. They don’t. Those of you who don’t like these hikes, what is your proposal?

The University of Washington announced a 14.5% increase this year AND next, so CA is not alone.

It’s about time…

hmom5 - I was just comparing tuition to tuition. not counting any room and board, since room and board is a variable cost.

The in-state tuition for PA residents at Penn State University Park is between $13,000 and $15,000 this year depending on your major.

I get that the hike is steep however, CA residents are doing much better than those in PA and many other Northeastern states. Forgive me for finding little sympathy.

^^I believe the total COA is a better proxy, and that is how finaid is budgeted. And, each UC campuses have ratcheted up their housing costs bcos the state capped their tuition/fees.

Current COA at PSU = $24,620 (room and board = $8,300)

Current COA at Cal = $28,312 (R&B = $15,308); proposed would exceed $30k

In what way?

For decades the in-state tuition in CA has been far cheaper than PA, NJ and many other Northeastern states. It’s been good for the kids in CA - not so good for kids back east.
There is only so much federal aid you can get from the Gov’t even if you are the neediest of needy.

Room and board is variable, tuition is a fixed cost. It all depends on your standard of living. You don’t have to get the most expensive meal plan or housing. At Penn State you can spend over $10,000 on r&b if you want but you dont have to. Looking at UCSB web site - same thing. There are r&b options for about $8000.
You don’t have to live on campus. this makes it a whole lot cheaper.
If you happen to live near campus you can commute.

Um, when my DD began at a UC many years ago, the first year tuition was $4k+, the next year was $5k+, then $6k+, then $7k+

There was no hue and cry, nothing in the news, but going from $4k+ to $5k+ was 20-25% increase.

And, yeah, it’s the housing that kills you at the UCs! You get the R&B option to which you are assigned, if they assign you to the expensive dorm, that is what you pay, there is no choice, but that is why people move out of campus housing and even with paying utilities and cooking you can save a decent chunk of money

I comparison to CA & PA, the COA at UWashington is still not too bad a deal. Tuition is $7,692 per year in-state, but total on-campus cost is $20,445. The tuition will go up to about $8807 next year. (The current OOS COA is $37,120.)

Excuse me?

Listed COA is around $26,000, but tuition + room/board comes to about $22k depending on the room assignment.
