There is a saying that you are where you live but I travel from country to country, city to city and still do not understand who I am. My father is one of the pastors in a worldwide Christian Organization. Growing up, my brother and I moved through different cities in the Philippines from the poorest to the richest. It was the reason why I never imagined a perfect home. I understood the circumstances within my father’s duty and discovered the persistence I had that led to the defeat of the obstacles of moving.
At the age 11, I traveled to the United States where my new home became California. It was the year of frustration for me because coming from a rural country to a large city everything was new and different. I remembered every chapel and the beauty it held. Soon enough, I moved to four different cities in California: Anaheim, Long Beach, Burlingame and currently Sacramento. Those seven years of relocation taught me to never attach greatly to people because I knew I was going to leave soon. From the most unsanitary cities to the most beautiful towns, I learned to be tough. I made friends I never wanted to leave and a team that felt like another family to me; I tolerated the tears that fell through my eyes as I drove off to another city.
Moving was always a part my life. The different cities and the experiences reflects the person I am today. The relocation of cities was like a chapter in a book; I learned that my life was a book with endless chapters. Traveling to new homes, new people and discovering the challenges were the reasons why my life revolved around so many chapters. In the beginning, my life always seemed so vague and misplaced that the only understanding was discovery. My life does not revolve around directions, although moving created frustrations and struggles in my life it also shaped who I am. It made me who I am today, persistent. Moving from city to city and the endless cries held from the goodbyes made me realize that the persistence inside me allowed me to defeat the inevitable battles I experienced.
