Hiya, I'm not going to post an essay for you to read since I've got English teachers and whatnot to do that for me. :D

It has always seemed to me that the most important element of a personal statement is to have your own "voice," something that suggests uniqueness and individuality. Because of that, I've avoided milking the whole oh-my-life-sucks-more-than-everyone-else's thing in favor of a story that may be slightly less tear-jerking.

The thing about the former argument is that I would have to talk about my being the son of immigrants, which, for the UCs, would be completely clich

I’ve had similar questions. I am not a good writer, and sadly I do face low income issues. I’m going with the honest approach, sadly, the honest approach for me is kind of the tear-jerking story. I wonder if they really do look at financial and ethnicity.

we can’t post you tube links, but if you google “applying to UC: the personal statement” you will find an hour-long power point presentation by a UC Admissions Rep from about 2007. She lays out EXACTLY what they are looking for. It’s a long dry presentation, but once you’ve seen it you will be able to write your essay with honesty and confidence.
