UC Psychology Major Transfers FALL 2020

Saw one of these made last year and thought it was a great idea. I think it can be tough to choose a school and understand which program would be the best for each of us. Feel free to post!

GPA:

I’ll start haha

GPA: 3.8
Igetc: done Spring 2019
Took every fall, spring, summer, and winter session

EC: 6 years as a dance coach, 2 years as a nanny working night shift hours, and (the main one I’m hoping helps me out in apps and I REALLY recommend for psych majors) half-year as a Crisis Text Line trained counselor.

*forgot to include in template *
Essays: Decently strong I would say. I tried to really bring out my passion for psychology and mental health. I discussed my brother’s mental illness & suicide, followed by the actions I took to turn that pain into passion. For helping my community question I discussed my work as a crisis text line counselor. And for the leadership question I talked about starting a new dance team at a local middle school (I think this one could have been strengthened).

Waiting for: UCSB (TAG), UCLA, UCSD
Accepted: UCD, UCI

GPA: 3.8 (I went to a private freshman year, and CC this year. GPA is from UCD’s analysis of my transcript)

EC’s: Lots from HS. As of now i work ~20 hrs a week, volunteer for campus event planning, Deaf club, (not much currently).

Essays: They were written well, but there was definitely room to share more about my background and my accomplishments over the year. Probably 6/10.

Waiting for: UCSB (tag) & UCLA
Accepted: UCD & UCI

GPA: 3.9

EC’s: 2 years after school teacher for 3rd graders and 1 year mentor/tutor for college assistant migrant program at my CC.

Essay: I reread them and I have a lot of room for improvement. I wrote about getting my first job and my youtube channel. It was more creative than professional tbh. My essay about the my first job had many details about my background and financial issues. My youtube essay was fun and laid back, definitely not my best and regret submitting it

Accepted: UCI

Denied: UCD, UCB

Waiting: UCSD

GPA: 3.83

TAP Certification: Yes

EC’s: SI Leader (Chemistry), EMT School, American Field Service (Foreign exchange student in high school), Board Member AGS, Scholars/STEM Programs, Took one upper div psych course at extension in fall (Psych 127A)

Schools accepted: N/A

denied: N/A

waiting for: UCLA (only applied here)

Hi Y’all !!!

GPA: 3.85

EC’s: internship, worked retail

Weakness: took the wrong bio class for the ucla pre req so I Had to go to another cc to take the right one.

Schools accepted: UCI (with regents and H2H) (tagged)

denied: None
waiting for: UCLA, UCSB, UCSD

GPA: 3.74
I went to UCSB for my freshman year and decently got As and Bs but my first quarter of my second year I was in a really dark place and got horrible grades (F, D-, C+) and left. Then I went to CC a year after and got 4.0 for 2 years. My counselor told me I most likely won’t get in though because my uc gpa is so bad and wasn’t replaced.

EC: Honestly not that many! ;( I’ve always been busy with work (sushi waitress) so I barely had time to do anything else. I’ve done a big research paper on body cues and facial expressions and did some volunteer work at my old high school but I don’t know… I’m really worried because this part of my application is so weak sigh…

Essay: I think my essays are fairly strong-- I personally really like them at least. I explained why I left UCSB and am pursuing psychology. I also tried to appeal to them that I have grown since then and am doing better, which shows with my current grades.

Accepted: UCI, CSUF
Waitlisted: CSULB (said I was missing documents :frowning: )
Waiting: UCLA, USC
*I know UCLA requires chemistry but I didn’t plan on applying until last minute so I’m taking it right now which I think might have a negative affect on my decision :frowning:

You all seem to have great applications!! Good luck to SB people today. Hopefully we’ll all be discussing which school to choose soon

Anyone here know about UCI’s major switching policies? Or, if I was accepted for Psych as a B.A, can I go down the B.S. path? I know with UCD it is pretty easy to switch majors after accepted, and with UCLA it’s kind of unheard of.

@flyingpancakes00 Because on our application BA/BS were under the same choice, I’m thinking you probably talk to a counselor or organize your classes when you get there so that you get the B.S. . My plan is to email a counselor in the next week once I have all my acceptances. I’ll let you know if I figure anything out!

How are you all feeling about LA today? I’m mentally preparing myself to be okay with a rejection haha.

GPA: 4.0
EC’s: I had tons in HS. Right now I work around 19 hours a week through my cc as a tutor
Essays: I would say they’re alright? I know I could’ve worked on them a lot more
Accepted: Humboldt, CSUN, CSUF, CSULA, SFSU, CSULB, UCSC, UCSB
Denied: SDSU

I’m most likely going to accept my offer from UCSB even though I’m missing a lot of pre requisites. But I talked to a senior majoring in psych and brain sciences last summer and she really sold my on the program and I just love Santa Barbara!

GPA: 3.98
EC’s: Toastmasters (Vice Pres. Public Relations at my campus’s club)
Work experience: Tutor at my cc’s tutoring center, respite caretaker for a teenager with autism

Essays: Each of them is about something different. here’s a small description of each one:

  • Required question: I talked about my interest in psychology, connecting it back to my childhood growing up with an autistic sibling, and then talked about the opportunities I took advantage of at my community college to enrich my experience and prepare me for transfer (specifically the Honors Transfer Project, which introduced more opportunities for research that mimics what you'd see at a UC. I also briefly mentioned my job as a respite caretaker to show that I'm serious about pursuing psychology and have some experience under my belt already)
  • Creativity essay: I talked about being a journalism student in high school and how I had to think of creative, out-of-the-box solutions to manage my workload since I had two editor positions at once in my senior year. I talk about what I learned and how these skills have transferred to college.
  • Academic challenge essay: I talk about the circumstances that led me to going to community college after high school as opposed to a 4 year university and how going to community college has helped me grow as a person and as a student, and how the traits I have accumulated at the community college will help me once I transfer
  • Significant life challenge essay: I talk about growing up in America as a Pakistani-American Muslim Immigrant (i know, it's the typical immigrant essay, blah blah) and the struggles I've faced in balancing two completely different cultures and finding myself in the process. Things like that. It's kind of cliche..

I also will have completed 18 units of honors coursework by the end of spring semester.

I applied to UCSC, UCD (TAG), UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, and UCB.
I got into UCSC, UCD, and UCSB. Rejected from UCB. have UCSD and UCLA left.
I’m probably getting rejected from UCLA because I didn’t take philosophy and all major prep is required. I did a lot of prep for a B.S. program in psychology and wasn’t able to fulfill all the requirements for B.A. programs (which is probably why I got rejected from Berkeley as well).

Since I got waitlisted at UCLA, I am deciding between UCD, UCI, and UCSB. Right now I am leaning towards UCSB just because I prefer the major more, and the location. But I feel as if UCI’s academics and program overall may be better, especially with research. Any opinions or thoughts?

Which psychology major will you be declaring if you end up going to Davis? The B/A or the BS biology emphasis or BS quantitative emphasis?

Update on my final standings:
Accepted:
UCSD
UCSB
UC Davis
UCSC
SJSU (I know it’s not a UC but thought I’d still throw that in there)

Denied:
UCLA
UCB

I got rejected from the prestigious universities which makes my decision a lot easier in a sense, lol. I want a B.S. degree and UCLA and UCB only offer BA’s and I would have probably ended up attending one of those universities if I had gotten in just because of prestige. I think my decision has come down to deciding between:

UCSD (cognitive psychology emphasis)
UCSB (psychological and brain science)
UC Davis (biology emphasis)

right now I’m leaning most towards UCSD because it seems that there are a TON of opportunities for research experience already embedded into the program itself. UCSB also has some research experience but not as much as UCSD… I’m wondering which of these three universities hold greater merit in their psych programs?

@exfolieate it is said that UCSD’s cognitive science department is one of the best. I feel as if that would influence their cog psych program as well.
