UC Regents without FAFSA?

<p>Can an applicant to the UC campuses still be eligible for a UC Regents or UC Chancellor Scholarship if she doesn't file a FAFSA? Is it the same at all UCs, or different for the different campuses?</p>

<p>Regents is based on merit and has nothing to do with FASFA. My D got regents at a UC’s but we did not file FASFA at all. </p>

<p>The Regents is different for different majors and I think it has been too long ago (3 years!) for me to remember which campuses did and which did not offer it along with entrance. She did not apply to every UC campus.</p>

<p>The amount given by the Regents scholarships depends on family income and asset.
One of my kids got Regents scholarships but the maximum award amount was $1000. It also depends on each college. My other kid got $7500 Regents award from UC Davis.</p>

<p>I think it depends on the UC. For UCB, some part of it depends on family income. When my kid applied to UCI, Regents were not depend on family income. It might have changed now.</p>

<p>Something to keep in mind–the number on the FAFSA for financial aid at the school isn’t always the same number used for scholarships that require you to show “need”. I don’t know specifically how it works at the UC schools but you should ALWAYS file the FAFSA for that reason.</p>

<p>This is addressed in the FAQ’s on the individual campus websites. For the most part, you need to demonstrate need to receive aid over and above the honorary stipend, which varies by campus. </p>

<p>I don’t think you need to file the FAFSA to be eligible for the honorary stipend, but I’ll be making some calls Monday to verify.</p>

<p>Yes, if awarded a Regent’s at Cal, the campus will replace a typical loan in a need-based aid package with grant money. Otherwise it’s just $1k. (To earn the extra grant, you’ll need to file fafsa.)</p>

<p>UCLA told me today that students do not need to file a FAFSA to be considered for the honorary stipend portion of the Regents scholarship. Same for Santa Cruz.</p>
