UC Rejects post stats

Just heard from UCSB today... rejected poli sci major, TAP, 3.4. They gave me the usual excuse we had a strong applicant pool yadayada... still waiting for the others but this is a really bad sign since I considered sb my safety.

dont take it too hard, a 3.4 is a very good gpa....where else did you apply?

Wow, I'm really suprized. Sorry to hear that. Did you have a lot of ECs? Did you feel you had a strong essay? I have a 3.5 with a poli sci major (and TAP,) and I'm considering SB my safety, too. Haven't heard from them yet.

Did you find out from the website, or through the mail?

I found out through the mail. The other UC's I applied to are even more competitive in my eyes (Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD) I'm kicking myself for not applying to Santa Cruz or even Riverside I might have to sit out a year to reapply if I dont get in anywhere. I felt I had a strong essay and lots of ec's including Alpha Gamma Sigma honor society, political science club vice prez, and lots of political mobilization internships. I just guess this year's transfer applicant pool is one of the strongest.

I probably have a really similar application. AGS, Speech and Debate, a few other things; I was VP of the poli sci club for a year and pres of another club. No big internships like you, but I talked about work experience (promotions, management, etc.) I'm really worried now. I applied to the same schools that you did, with the addition of Irvine (boy am I glad now!) Let me know what you hear from the other schools. Good luck!

Shouldn't UCSB have guaranteed you admission provided that you that met all of their conditions (2.8, 60 units, minimum general education requirements -or- IGETC) since your a PoliSci major?

I also applied to PoliSci and just got my admission today (3.21 GPA, pretty much no ECs, good/great essays)

Yah that is weird. I've heard to Political Science majors getting in at UCSB with 3.2-3.3's....
Are you missing some major requirement?

Assuming you qualify for the guaranteed transfer, you don't even need to have any major requirements completed.

You should appeal. 3.4 is good. It's messed up you didn't get in.

i have a 4.0 and UCD is nowhere in sight. i must be cursed by the greek god of transfer students.

Blackdream, didn't you say you're using lots of AP credit to fulfill requirements? That may be the reason why it's taking so much longer..
If you don't hear from them within a week you should probably call and inquire...Good luck!

wow 3.4 rejected from UCSB?? is poli sci. like a impacted major? I thought their cutoff was 2.8 with TAA

this is very very strange...are you a transfer or a HS student? were you missing more than 2 pre-reqs?

mexbruin, sorry to hear that.

For us future applicants in 2005.... Did u have IGETC done? how about prereqs completed?

Very strange.

I called UCSB today to get an explanation and they said that it had nothing to do with my gpa but it had to do with the fact that I had a total of 92 units completed and in so doing have attained "senior standing" I thought they wouldn't count the units that weren't uc-transferable but they counted everything and they said the max was 90. Now I don't know what to think. Do all the UC's disqualify you for having more than 90 units? (I always carried 12 or more units because of my financial situation I would not get any aid if I didn't do that so I would load up on unecessary courses like an excel class, intro to powerpoint that sort of stuff but never realized it would kill my chances of admission) Anyone know of schools I can apply for in the fall of this year I'm literally willing to go anywhere now that I found this out.

Maybe you should consider appealing on the basis of units... I think the general assumption is that schools use all the transferable units to calculate your gpa, but that anything beyong 70 or so didn't transfer. You said you took a lot of classes like Excel, but aren't those type of classes usually not UC transferable?

mexbruin, did u go anywhere other than a cc? I have 91 units completed and I was accepted. Maybe it was because some of mine were AP credit.

I only had 4 ap units. I don't know anymore I don't even want to appeal. I have 92 total units and was unaware of the cap I just did myself in. I am going to call to get an explanation but I seriously doubt anything will get resolved or changed I feel stupid and feel like I just wasted 3 years of my life for nothing. I'm considering out of state for the spring some college's don't have a cap until 120 units. That's my last option I guess.

wow that sucks

Wow, that's a sticky situation to be in, and I really don't know what to say. Perhaps you could try calling the admissions office and maybe beggining for them to accept them? It sucks that 2 units could knock you out of admission. Here's what Berkeley says about transfers:

Q: If my total number of UC transferable units is over 80, am I eligible for admission?
A: Probably not. Unfortunately, most applicants with excess units are denied admission. Exception: If all of your coursework has been or will be completed at one or more California community colleges, you are eligible for admission and the maximum transfer credit you can receive is 70 semester (105 quarter) units.
