Hello there everyone!! I haven’t seen a transfer thread for UCR Fall 2020 yet, so I decided to start one. Feel free to post your stats or any questions, comments or concerns you may have throughout the process.
I’ll start off with my stats.
Major: Biochemistry
Alternative Major: Microbiology
GPA: 3.4
Major Prep: Will finish by spring 2020
Transfer: From a CSU (I know I have a small chance, but hey, one last chance at a dream right?)
EC’s/Community Service: Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Dean’s List. Pre-Health Society member. Taught chemistry experiments to young boys and girls scouts. Hospital Volunteer for 1 year. Gymnastics Coach/ Volunteer in HS for 2 years. Participant in the International Fair in college and Multicultural Fair in HS for 4 years. Previous part-time job as a Cryotherapy Technician
Personal Statements: Relatively strong, according to a couple of tutors and professors.
I’ve been looking at all these transfer threads for quite some time now and thought might as well join in the fun! Previously, I was on the pre-nursing track hence why my GPA is sad (IMO).
Here are my stats as listed:
Major: Poli Sci/Intl. Affairs
GPA: 3.4 something lol (surprisingly on the higher end according to UCR’s 2018 transfer data for my major)
IGETC: Finished in Spring Quarter 2020 (one left. I’m annoyed at my cc’s counselors lol)
Major Prep: Finished in Winter Quarter 2020
TAG: UCR (honestly, I wish I did not tag UCR, but it is what it is)
Applied: UCSD, UCSB, UCR, SFSU, Sac State, Fullerton, CSULB, SDSU (wishing I applied to one or two more UC schools, but oh well)
@DiamondCalmDown Hmm, well in regards to my stats, I am pretty confident about getting admitted into UCR. Because of how “easy” I’ll receive my acceptance, I do feel it does hinder my interest to attend UCR a bit. Despite that though, I would still be extremely grateful and consider attending UCR. Receiving a higher education is a privilege, so I cannot complain. It’s definitely not the most ideal school I would want to go to, but due to my stats…it is what is ?
At the end of the day, it is what you take away from your education and not the prestige of the school. You strive for the best in your unideal circumstances
@DiamondCalmDown oh nice! i’ve been doing some research about ucr as a transfer student and i totally agree—they do have a lot of resources for transfers. what did you learn about housing for transfers? i’ve looked into it, but i think there’s no housing guarantee for us?
@jt1015 from what I seen there are about 6 “facilities” or " apartments" options for us. One is for international students only but, if you’re not an international student and want to live there you must write a letter stating why. The other 3 or the remaining 5 have options to live alone, meaning no roommates at all in a studio or one bedroom apartment with kitchen (these are the ones im going to apply for) these range from 1130-1320. I believe only two of them are actually on campus the international and Glen Mor the others are one of two blocks away, definitely in walking distance. I have a car but I plan on riding my bike because I hear parking is expensive at the college. All “facilities” or “apartments” offer the roommate thing where you can have your own room but still share the apartment with someone else or share your room with someone, this ranges from like 400+ to 1320 depending on the apartment. They say the Glem mor is the best but I wasn’t interested because they don’t offer what im looking for
From what I seen all of the apartments come with wifi and cable, utilities included. some are furnished some are not.
they say the apartments fill up fast but you cannot apply for them until after you sir. some of the apartments have rent free summers if you re apply to stay in the same apartment the next academic year I know for sure Stonehaven offers this.
from what I heard there is no guarantee. UCI has guarantee but they dont have what im looking for housing wise so if I were to choose to go there ill be spending about 2k on an apartment ugh!!!
well i’m sure i’m missing a few things but if I can think of anything else ill come back lol
also, question. in the case where i get accepted by ucr, should i sir to ucr right away and go through with the process (housing being my main priority since i’m from norcal. i do want to get that situated asap)? my issue is that i still have to wait for ucsb and ucsd admission decisions and they come out way later. i’ve seen in past threads about cancelling sir’s and it seems like a whole headache and a two…but i’m more interested in attending ucsd or ucsb if i were to be accepted by either schools. i don’t really know how and what i’m trying to elaborate on this matter since i’m new to this transferring process, but what would be the best course of plan for me? should i wait or sir to ucr (if i do get accepted) just so i have a safety net? my main concern about this whole transferring process is just housing lol ?
@jt1015 I know exactly what you’re saying/asking . Being that UCR isn’t priority for you yet they are the first to send decisions with limited housing puts you in a bind. Ultimately, what you do is completely up to you but i’m gonna put my two cents in lol. Most people have to pay to SIR which is a couple hundred dollars ( I think ) so if you SIR to UCR but decide to go somewhere else you will not get that money back and you’d still have to pay at the school you choose. Those who don’t have to pay to SIR id say heck yeah SiR & get your housing.
If it were me id pay to SIR for my safety school if this were the case.
Ive never heard it to be hard to cancel SIR hopefully someone else in this thread can explain that to us.
I guess ill give you a lil background I applied to UCSD & UCSB (amongst other schools) last year & got in
Bio major
3.5something
honors students , dens list a few times
missing physics
I got into both: UCSB for my primary major & UCSD for second choice major ( sociology)
I say all this to say your chances look good to me but im not professional. ?
@DiamondCalmDown oh i am definitely going to have to pay for my sir’s haha (just in terms of my financial background. highly doubt they’ll waive/defer it lol). and you’re right! the sir cost is $250 AND it’s non-refundable. that is what’s making me hesitant about the whole ordeal.
i totally agree with you that i should sir to my safety school though (that being ucr). i think it is what it is. if ucsd and/or ucsb accepts me, i will unfortunately be losing $500 just for sir-ing lol
if anyone can fill in the holes about my concern(s?), i would really appreciate that
Did everyone get this announcement in their portal just now?
“Find out what student life is really like @LifeatUCR — written and managed by students, for students!..” yada yada yada
It says for “STUDENTS” im guessing im gonna be a student there? lol
I know they started sending Freshmen their acceptances today. Couple of my students got In today.
Got that too… don’t think it’s a sign as much as I’d like it to be LOL. Really hoping my TAG works out since its pretty much the only school I got a shot at
@vlimit most likely the site’s traffic lol! a lot of applicants are probably trying to log in right now. it took a few minutes for the ucr portal home screen to load for me. initially, i thought it was a sign, but i had to bring myself back to reality hahah
