UC Riverside vs. Cal Poly Pomona

Right now it’s down to UCR and CPP. I was accepted to both for Biology/Biological Sciences but I’m not sure which one would be best. I’m kind of leaning towards UCR, because I’ve visited the campus twice, I like the feel of it, they’ve offered me a lot of financial aid and just reached out to me more. But I haven’t yet visited Cal Poly’s campus so I plan to do a tour over spring break and I might get a pretty good look at it since I’m attending their Black Student Brunch thing or whatever they call it. I just want to make the right choice for my major and pick the school I’d be most comfortable at. I’ll be living in the dorms and I’ve always been really close to home and never really had a roommate so I’m curious about that, as well as dorm sizes. Are the people nice at both schools? My gut is telling me to go with UCR, but that’s mostly because I basically know nothing about CPP. So, what are your thoughts?

CPP is about half as expensive as UCR, so theres that.

I would go for the school you feel best fits you and that you feel the most comfortable with
It is best to make your decision after you give CPP a visit

They are both very good schools. Assuming you are one of the 50% that actually pays tuition, there is a significant price difference. I wouldn’t go into debt for the UC vs CSU.

Take your CPP tour with an open mind - talk to some current students while you are there - stop a few and ask them how they like it, what they don’t like, where they live, etc.

You are making a choice between two very good options. Once you have all your info, follow your gut knowing - either way - you’ll find yourself in a great place.

OMG! I was in between those two as well!! I wanted to choose UCR because its a UC… but then again that was not a good choice. I chose CPP!!! From my research in both schools I know that CPP has great hands on programs in that department, which seem really cool! It also depends what kind of person you are because at UCR there is not much to do and it is very hot ! Cal poly has a very nice and clean campus and is way cheaper!

I went with UCR because I found out that I didn’t have to be in a science related major to get into med school so I decided to go with Creative Writing which CPP doesn’t have. I also didn’t really like CPP’s English program that much so yeah…Also I kinda just felt more comfortable on the UCR campus, like I could envision myself living/going to school there. I know they’re both commuter schools but UCR seems to have more going on over the weekends compared to CPP which was a total ghost town when I went on a Saturday (I literally only saw like 5 or so people walking around campus when I toured it). Also, it’ll probably be easier for me to get into a medical school from UCR since they’re more research based and med schools really look for that. UCR also has this deal where they open up 24 spots in their med school for their undergrad students so that could be a good opportunity. I also heard that it’s really hard to get the classes you want at Cal states so most students end up graduating in 5 years or more but I’ve heard that at UCR even if you’re not in the Honors Program, it’s still very doable to get the classes you want. UCR also gave me a ton of FA so my tuition is free for this year while CPP still hasn’t gotten back to me. I’ve also come to meet some pretty cool people on UCR’s class of 2019 Facebook group ;). I don’t mean to totally trash CPP, I’m just saying why I like UCR better. If I had gone with a bio major, I might have leaned more towards CPP because it’s closer to LA, the beach, where I grew up, they have an amazing gym, they have a ton of places to eat at on campus that I like, and it’s only 30 minutes from my friends going to Biola.

These are just my thoughts but I like other people have said on here, it’s about what best fits you and where you feel most comfortable so keep an open mind
