UC Riverside vs. UC Merced

I have a feeling these may be my only options to transfer for Mechanical Engineering.... so I wanna know what everyone thinks about the two since they seem fairly different... i.e. big vs. small school, opportunities, etc.

UC Riverside only cuz its more established.

its a hard choice between meth labs and cow pies

IIRC UC Merced isn’t even fully accredited yet, definitely go UCR

The only reason I would take UCM over UCR would be because UCM is on the semester system.

Otherwise, bank on UCR.

i like quarter system…dont go 2 merced if u got in Riverside

Oh man, I’m waiting for lakers to see this thread haha.

Anyways, Riverside is actually a pretty good school and it is still a UC. If I were in your shoes, I’d take Riverside any day.

I think Riverside has a lot of – at times unfairly placed – stigma to it. It’s still a pretty good school nationally: [University of California–Riverside - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/riverside-ca/ucr-1316)

I mean, being ranked 96th nationwide isn’t so bad when you consider the hundreds of schools out there. Sure, it’s not UCLA or Berkeley, but it’s still a school that will give you a decent education. College is what you make of it; going to UCLA doesn’t automatically guarantee that you’re going to go through some enlightenment process. With that said, without a doubt go to Riverside. You’ll get out of it what you put into it, imo. That’s true for any UC.

I have a few friends who’ve become quite successful coming out of UCR. Two who currently attend UCLA med school and one who attends Hastings Law school. It really is what you make out of it rather than this obsessive focus on the schools name. I figure as long as it is a UC, your going to get a good eduction and with a high gpa (and a mixture of experience/internships) you should have great opportunities afterwards.

BayAreaTransfer and Bme2684 you guy made a very strong point that it all depends on what you put into your school and not what your school will guarantee that you r going enter a good career…

I’d rather go to UC Merced, but that’s because it’s closer to Yosemite. :)

I would go with Ucr just cause a lot of girls i know go there lol. Then again I wouldn’t go to either one. I may be wrong on this and please correct me if I am, but i believe you can tag into a engineering program at another uc.

Why would you ever think about going to Merced…?

I live in Merced. It is not that fun. Nothing to do. Sac is 2 hours away. SF is about 2 and half away. Yosemite is close if you are into that stuff. It is pretty safe though not much murders. UCM is like the outskirts of Merced. They are still building a lot of stuff.

i cannot wait till laker gets on this discussion. predicting some form of insult to both schools.

lot of you kids love to jock this laker fool’s nuts. suck it

p.s., ucr > ucm

Thanks guys, so it sounds like an overwhelming response towards UCR. Any engineers out there who’ve been there?

riverside… merced just opened so there really nothing to do there.

Miserlou: I’m a computer science major at UCR. I’m in the college of engineering and I have to take all the same classes they do (harder physics, math, etc.). Feel free to ask me anything.

UCR! …its a good school, better than Merced in my point of view. I live in Riverside, and it is not bad as how some people portrait it to be…
