I also was invited and attended the VIP tour last month. UCSD is my dream school, so excited!

I got the call yesterday at 4:37 pm (PST). The lady mentioned seeing me while I was on the VIP Tour. Her mentioning that basically confirms that those that got invited to the VIP Tour are in, at least in my opinion. When applying to UC, I tried to structure my entire app around my love for journalism, writing and communication skills since these are the things I want to emphasize in my college education. Not sure if I will be attending. I am still waiting to hear back from UCLA and UMichigan.

They said that they’ll be calling the top 30% of the applicants, but last year’s acceptance rate was about 33%… so hypothetically assuming that this year’s acceptance rate is also 33%, only 3% of the admitted people won’t be receiving a call? Or am I misunderstanding this?

Also, is UCSD determining who gets early admission ONLY by GPA/SAT or ACT, ALL academic merit (including SAT 2’s, AP scores, etc.), or BOTH academic and subjective merit?

@blessupman Top 30% of the admitted applicants.

If we take last year’s sample of the admitted UC San Diego applicants at the freshman level, it would be the following:

78,091 applied
26,495 admitted
7,949~ will receive the calls.

@10s4life Combine the characters around the space. For example, if we combine the bracket and the letter “b” to make a statement bold we get the following:

[ b]UC San Diego[/b ]
UC San Diego

@0verachiever @missjantastic Can I ask what times you guys received your call?

Do you guys think someone with a UC GPA of 3.77 can get admitted? SAT scores are not all that great either :frowning: :-S I have taken a demanding curriculum though! (1 AP Sophomore Year and 4 APs Junior Year) and I have fairly decent extracurriculars! Leadership positions in all 5 clubs listed plus I’m an Eagle Scout (and I have about 650 SSL hours). Will any of that help? :frowning: also, do they look at just CR and Math on the SAT? Or all 3 sections? And for that matter, do they only care about the overall SAT score, or do they care about the score breakdown?

I think that while it may be a reach statistically speaking, an essay could help mend the gap and allow you to be admitted. It really is always based holistically, so don’t worry too much! Also, I am pretty sure that UCSD accounts for all three sections and will probably evaluate the score in each (at least depending on the college you applied to).

@blessupman sure! I received mine yesterday at 5 o clock.

@jackisawesome thank you so much! I really appreciate it your help! Do youn think being gay will help in terms of diversity?

No problem! As far as the sexuality goes, I am not really sure! I am gay as well and am honestly hoping that it could be considered under the URM category. I will let you and others know if I find out anything for the UCs. For Ivys, I heard being gay does help (but I could have been reading an absolute farce of an article lol).

Dang, do you think we would have received a call already if we’re considered URMs? You more so than I because your stats are higher?

And yeah, I’ve read a few articles and from what I can tell, being gay doesn’t do much  I was hoping that the UCs could be different though. I guess it’s a good sign that they added the sexual orientation and gender identity questions to the application this year. Either way, I don’t think it’ll matter in the grand scheme of things haha

true @eric2020 But I am not sure if those are used for the admission process, but rather towards scholarships

@jackisawesome
To be honest I’d be surprised if it was factored into admissions at all because of it was a large number of students would put that even if it wasn’t true. It may be for special scholarships for those demographics or something like that.

[/ul]General Comments/Additional Information:[list]
I got a few calls but till today (Saturday, March 5) I was able to answer. It was a UCSD alumni telling me that I was in! I’m very happy!!!

@Katecat27 True; but, it’s not that hard to select an african american/latino box either- and who would know and how? I doubt with the large amounts of students that they actually check 90k+ profiles. Regardless, I feel as though URM is race-limited.

@eric2020 Based on that GPA alone, you have a 19% chance for being admitted from UC San Diego. But remember, there are SEVERAL other variables that could affect your admission — not just GPA.

I got a supplemental questionnaire from UCSD and I have a 3.04 UC GPA, but I worked my butt off more than ever on my essays and extracurricular activities. I also got one from UCLA, which I still can’t believe to be honest.

To add, UCs are looking for unique people…something you can add to the campus. If you think you obtain something that is very rare for our age right now, you’ll probably get in.

Good luck!

@jackisawesome @eric2020 You’ll be fine, do not worry about it. However, UCSD is in the most conservative area of San Diego, so you may not be completely open about it right away until you discover more about the area. Plus, if both of you get admitted you can hook each other up and get started! …maybe? …no?
