UC San Diego Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

Haven’t seen a fall 2020 transfer thread for UCSD, so I decided to make one (:

Here are my stats, UCSD is my first choice so I’m kind of scared this won’t be enough.

Major: Biology
GPA: 3.87
IGETC: Will finish by spring 2020
Major Prep: Will finish by spring 2020
EC’s/Community Service: I volunteer at both a cat shelter and a hospital. Also part of a health-profession organization at school. Participated in blood drives.
Personal Statements: Average, still tweaking them.

UCSD has always been my dream UC, and thinking to apply for fall 2020 as transfer, here are my Stats:

Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.72-3.75, (try to get to 3.8 by the end of fall semester)
IGETC: N/A (applying from CSU)
EC’s: Currently running 2 clubs as founding members and taking officer positions for both (pretty average EC’s…)
Personal Statement: Try to recover from my UC rejections 2 years ago as I’m working on them

I am applying as Biology as my main major and Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology as my alternative. By spring, I will have both gen chems, both ochems, two semesters of bio, stats, and two calcs. I will be missing third semester of bio and the physics series. I have a 4.0 so far. How is it looking so far guys?

As someone who transferred in Fall 2018, I would not recommend transferring to UCSD, parking is a really bad problem (they keep cutting down parking lots and then charging more for parking, if you can find parking that is), taking the bus if you live in a popular area off campus you might get passed two to three times, living on campus is very crowded (most people get triples 98 percent now I think for transfers), there isn’t a very strong transfer community (literally almost no support for any transfers unless you’re engineering), anything STEM is very difficult to get into classes (particularly cog sci or CS, I’m feel so sorry for you STEM majors tbh), you’ll never find seats in the library or elsewhere to study, freshmen get priority in everything, students are not prioritized at all. I would not recommend transferring here, seriously, join the UCSD reddit page, you’ll see what I mean. They’re accepting more students than they can handle, our campus is overcrowded and it’s just getting worse. I would honestly transfer elsewhere if I were you.

@hailey5799 what you are complaining about is true of most UCs. Please do not denigrate a campus and tell others not to attend.

Ooof I’m very noncompetitive but hey you miss all the shots you don’t take

Major: Psychology (Alternate major psychology with a concentration in cognitive psychology)
GPA: 3.31 (99% likely it’ll be up to a 3.5 by the end of this semester and a 3.6-3.7ish by the end of winter)
IGETC: Will finish by spring 2020
Major Prep: Will finish by spring 2020
EC’s/Community Service: I volunteer at a hospital, treasurer for pre-med club at my cc, international student partner, UMOJA participant for two years now (African American program partnered with the UCs).
Personal Statements: According to my counselors, pretty good.

I actually had a question about the PIQs. Apparently they want to hear more about what you’ve done in community college and not high school, which makes sense. But I wrote about a very defining moment that for me happened in high school. I linked it back to how it’s helped me being at a cc, but will I get “points off” for it being high school focused?

OMGGGGG. I need help. @Ohm888 Can probably help me. Ive been to a few different campuses and im trying to come back to ucsd. I was accepted 2 cycles ago but never attended which im now regretting. I did my first year at UCSC but left and been at community ever since. Got into UCI and was supposed to start this year but left my first day there took no classes. Theres a unit cap for people like me who have been to a 4 year before, which is 135 quarter units. I passed that… But i only have 1 upper division class. Most ucsd advising and admissions people tell me 135 is the limit but I think they assume that Ive taken upper division classes which would make me a senior transfer but im not! On the admissions page it says they dont accept senior transfers, and you may be considered senior if you have 70 sem units lower division and 20 divs upper division. I dont have that so I shouldnt be a senior transfer. The only reason I went over the 135 units is so that I could get a pell grant cause I need the money lol. My transcript is essentially empty lower div classes… Im gonna call admissions tomorrow again and see what they say but Im getting mixed answers. I called a month ago they said as long as you dont have the 20 upper divs you can apply while when i emailed admissions they said more than 135 not considered. I can’t afford to go back to UCI or Santa cruz cause I live in SD… Idk what to do. Considering SDSU but its hard to get in and idk if my quarter classes will transfer. Help :frowning:

They add **all **UC courses (upper and lower) on top of any other lower division. So if you have, say, 35 units from a UC and 75 from a CCC, they will cap the 75 CCC at 70, and then add the 35 from the UC on top of the 70.

So you weren’t happy at UCSD, then you weren’t happy at UCSC, then you weren’t happy at UCI. I honestly can’t tell you what they will think with all that bouncing around.

Well I was only unhappy at UCSC, the rest was just financial issues and personal problems lol. Aside from that! I’m not sure what you meant with the counting. I’m over the 135 limit but It’s all lower divs. Let me show you the webpage. https:// admissions. ucsd. edu/ transfer/ application- requirements. html
Just remove the spaces. Go to the part where it says we only accept at the junior level it explains the unit breakdown.

I hella want to get in, but I’m not sure if my application is competitive enough :frowning: Let me know what you guys think. I guess there’s no way to know until I apply.

Major: Computer Science/ Data Science Alternative
GPA: 3.30 (3.40 by end of Fall hopefully)
Major Prep: Will have completed Calc series, and 3 intro CS courses, and Physics series.
EC’s: I’ve been working full time the entire time I’ve been in school. I’m 26 so I need to support myself lol.

Was going to focus on my professional working experience for personal statements.

@Princetonian9 they will add all lower division from UCSC on top
of your lower division total from a CCC. UC units aren’t part of the 70 sem/105 qtr cap. They are not calculated the same way.

So assuming you have 100 from a CCC and 45 total units from UCSC, your final total is 145 qtr.

@ohm888 So would I still be considered a senior transfer even though I don’t have what their website considers as a senior (70 lower div and 20 upper div)?

Major: Computer Science
Applying: UCSD & UCI
Finishing minimum requirements by the end of Spring 2020
Finishing 7 course pattern by end of Fall 2019

Missing 3 courses from IGETC, I can take one more course and I will have my partial IGETC, but there is no option of choosing partial IGETC on the UC application? Anyone know what shall I choose?
Also, if I plan to finish IGETC in summer 2020, will UCs accept it?

@orincetonian9 Yes because as I said they treat all lower division units at a UC the same as upper division.

@hailey5799 I’m honestly really surprised to heard that. Because those are exactly the problems that SJSU is having (in my point of view, I think is worst). Even though SJSU don’t cut down parking spots since 80% of the students are commuter, the whole parking situation is just the worst I have ever seen in my life. On top of that, I think UCSD is a lot better since UCSD is a lot more well-rounded than SJSU.

Does anyone know if UCSD considers an impacted major as an alternative, if it’s less impacted than the first choice major?

UCTransferr2020 I’m not sure, which alternate do you have in mind? If you have CS as main, then maybe go for something like cognitive science as an alternate?

Just keep in mind, any major outside of the CSE department has absolutely no priority for CS classes. That includes math-CS too. This means that UCSD lets in all CSE majors before anyone else can register for a class. Given how crazy impacted CSE majors are, not having priority is close to a death sentence in registering those classes. So if you choose that, you might have to say goodbye to alot of CS classes (if not most).

@henloworld
I’m thinking about choosing Data Science as my alternative major. It says it’s an impacted major on UCSD website, it’s a new major though and doesn’t require major preparation for transfer fall 2020.
It’s also not in Computer Science department. So I was wondering will I ever be given the chance of admission to Data Science if my Computer Science app gets rejected.

@UCTransferr2020 I would not recommend having both your major and alternative major be impacted because since both have limited spaces, it really does bring your chances down, even if you are a competitive applicant. You will get the chance of admission, but if both are out of spaces, you won’t get in, or at least will be waitlisted :frowning: That is kinda why the UCs recommend having an alternative that isn’t impacted if you have a major that is.
