So I received a supplemental from UC San Diego basically asking me about community service and pre college programs, however at the top it stated “We are sending you this survey in hopes of better understanding details presented in your application. Please answer the questionnaire fully, and do not refer us back to information already presented in your original application or personal insight questions.”
One of the short answer questions is “Are there any personal circumstances that have significantly impacted your ability to achieve academically? This includes, but is not limited to matters such as employment, family responsibilities, illness or school environment.
If yes, how have you tried to overcome these circumstances and how has the experience prepared you to overcome any personal challenges that might occur if you were a student at UC San Diego?”
If I already wrote about my challenges in my UC application would I not include it here since it says “do not refer us back to information already presented in original application”? Because technically the answer is yes but I’m not sure I understand the wording.
Please respond quickly if you can as this is due tonight. Thank you before hand!
Yikes, you just got this and it is due tonight?? If it were my daughter I would find a neutral person who could read her application and the instructions and try to see what was obviously sticking out to them. Do they not believe something on the application? Is something not spelled out well enough? Is there some contradiction that jumps off the page? Did your grades dip one quarter? Did you have a odd C stuck in a sea of A’s one quarter.
You must be on the bubble. There is something that someone put a big question mark on. Maybe you talked in an essay about taking care of a parent who is sick, and your have a dip in your grades one quarter but the two aren’t connected. Take the specific outlier and explain it. If you got a “C” in a class that is your targeted major, explain it, be very straight forward about the specific class, or situation.
Good luck!
OP would you mind sharing your stats? I received the supplemental from UC San Diego too.
Received this Jan 25, submitted Feb 1. 4.03 GPA (3.9 UW), 1560 SAT; I basically just expanded on the hardship I described in my personal statements
@fdha951 I recieved it on Jan 15 and submitted Feb 1 as well. UC GPA: 4.68 (UW: 3.96) SAT: 1350. I got the same prompt about hardship. Do you know of anyone else that received the request to fill out the supplemental questions? I’ve heard some people say that UCSD sends them borderline applicants but so far everyone I’ve seen that has received the request has pretty above average stats for UCSD.
Just for clarification for all posters receiving or questioning the reason for getting an augmented/supplemental review. Being “borderline” is only one reason.
The criteria for referring an applicant for Augmented Review include the following:
- Evidence of focus on an area of special talent which may have limited a student’s time to participate in a broader range of activities.
- Evidence of character traits that imply a strong likelihood of making a significant contribution to campus life.
- Evidence of significant academic achievement or the potential for academic achievement at the University in spite of extraordinary or compound disadvantage or learning difference, or physical disability or other unusual circumstances.
- Evidence of significant improvement in the academic record accompanied by one or both of the following: (1) reasons for the initial poor performance; and (2) sustained and in-depth participation in educational outreach programs, which demonstrate the applicant’s commitment to succeed academically within a challenging environment.
- Evidence of relative lack of access to, counseling about, or support to take college preparatory, honors, Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes or required college entrance examinations.
When does regent come out for UCSD? Berkeley came out last Friday.
UCSD does an early calling campaign usually early March so that is when Regent recipients are notified.
