Uc san diego tag

it says u must have a 3.0 gpa by the end of fall semester 2010 if ur applying for fall 2011. is that a typo or is that right? how would they know what ur fall GPA is if ur applying in october?

lol you’re overreacting, they mean 3.0 gpa by the end of summer 2010 and they also want YOU to maintain a 3.0 gpa by the end of fall semester, hope that answers your question…
source: own experience

Technically you could, I think, have a 2.9 after Summer and a 3.0 after Fall, and still qualify for TAG at UCSD. If you had a 3.0 after Summer, but a 2.9 after Fall, you’d be disqualified from TAG.

You submit a grade update once your Fall grades are posted. These are the last grades the UCs have with which to make their admissions decision.

so all UCs view your fall semester grades before deciding on whether to admit you or not? or do u mean after youre admitted you send in ur grades to prove ur maintaining them?

From what I’ve heard, UCs don’t even look at applications until January, and you’re supposed to submit fall grades by the first or second week of that month. Your actual Fall grades are definitely a factor in the admissions process.

Your Spring grades (from the year you transfer) don’t play a role in the admission decision. When you’re accepted in March-April, that acceptance is conditional on you doing certain things. This normally means having a 3.0 or better in Spring, and finishing any planned Spring classes that are requirements with satisfactory grades.

You don’t submit any actual transcripts before you’re accepted–you report your own grades. If the official transcripts don’t match what you reported, that’s grounds for your acceptance to be rescinded.

what about for TAG? dont they look at your official transcripts earlier?

btw thank you so much youre really helpful.

Nope. TAG and your initial acceptance in March-April are entirely based on your self-reported information. They don’t want to deal with the paperwork for 18,000+ transfer applicants (in the case of UCLA).

Normally colleges want transcripts up front–USC does, for instance. But when you think about it, UC’s policy makes sense. Have students report their grades, grant them conditional admission, and if they lied on the application, rescind their admission. Much more efficient.

if the gpa u have when fall semester is completed is significantly higher than what you applied with, that would help with chances of getting in right?

Yes. They give Fall grades the same consideration as the other grades they see. If your more recent grades are significantly higher than your earlier grades, that’s good. UCs look favorably on upward trends.

Though debatable, it’s probably better to be a 3.0 student whose first year was all C’s, and whose second year was all A’s, than a 3.0 student who got only B’s both years.

@jayyi04

idk if you are providing false info. i looked up UCSD TAG fall 2011 and summer session is mentioned twice as follows:

"You have been enrolled at one or more CCCs for at least 2 regular terms (excludes summer sessions)

You are attending a CCC as your last college before UC San Diego admission (excludes summer sessions)"

So i have no idea where a set gpa must be maintained prior to fall 2010. What is mentioned about fall 2010 gpa is as follows:

“You must earn a cumulative 3.0 minimum UC GPA earned by the END of Fall term 2010 and maintained through the end of Spring term 2011.”

Keyword is, end.

Following the wording of the TAG agreement, one could have a 0.5 gpa and somehow manage to earn at least a 3.0 and have a valid TAG agreement.

NO EXPLICIT WORDING OF A GPA THAT MUST BE B4 FALL 2010.

so do all UCs count ur fall admission grades in the “overral GPA” ur applying with? for example, looking at the profile of the admitted students, it says 80% had a 3.0 or higher. is that including the fall?

Yes. Some reports have even said that they don’t begin looking at applications until after Fall grades are submitted in January.

Also, even if your Spring grades boost your GPA significantly, that alone isn’t grounds for appeal of a rejection.

Spring grades don’t really matter at all, unless you’re working on a major prep requirement, and as long as you stay above the minimum specified by your acceptance (generally 3.0).

o perfect! so what are the chances of getting into UCI with around a 3.3 after fall semester?

i mayyy be able to get TAG if my english teacher fixes my grade in time, but if not, itll be a 3.3 after fall with no TAG =(

What major?

In general, 3.3 to Irvine without TAG is right about the average (most students TAG, but have above the minimum). You should have a decent shot.

social ecology. i want law & society but its a bit more competitive. i might minor with creative writing

Doesn’t Irvine have the top Social Ecology program in the country? ;-)

Here’s what someone else posted last March:

So you have a chance, especially if you do well this Fall.

social ecology’s minimum gpa is a 2.7. so if by fall i have a 3.3 or 3.4, my chances should be pretty good of getting in right? AHHh im paranoid. idealy, my major would be law&society but that requires a 3.0 and i dont think my chances would be that great…what do u think?

Well, remember that surpassing the minimum does not mean you’ll be accepted. UCLA’s minimum GPA for freshman applicants is 3.0, but no one gets in with a GPA that low. What’s more relevant is the average admitted GPA. Of course, this is still an average, but it’s a better indicator than the minimum.

That said, I think you’re in good shape with a 3.3 or 3.4. Obviously it’s not a guarantee, but you’re definitely competitive. If your law and society prereqs are complete you’d probably be competitive there, too, but social ecology is safer.

there actually arent any prereqs for social ecology! ive taken sociology and psych tho. everything else was just of the required areas of the IGETC
