I’m honestly so shocked I was waitlisted to UCSC. I wasn’t at all planning on attending, but this was supposed to be my safety school and it’s a complete shock to me. I cannot understand how I got into multiple other top universities, almost all with scholarships but cannot get into UCSC which is only ranked 70th in the country.

Daughter got in. Now we’re waiting on UCSB and UCSD. Santa Cruz good school, not too far for us less than 5 hours. So this could be a great thing. Nice when California Kids get into good California Schools.

Waiting on UCSB

Son Accepted! Chemistry major. So far accepted to local schools applied due to major. Still waiting on UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, USC which are all a reach. Good luck to everyone. Think positive!!!

@bugbear07: Perhaps UCSC knew they were being used as a Safety school and would prefer students that actually want to attend. Although your SAT is very competitive, your UC GPA is just at average. You have some good options so far so love the schools that love you.

UCSC average capped weighted UC GPA: 3.96
25th-75th percentile SAT: 1210-1450

This is what UCSC looks for in their application review:

  • SANTA CRUZ

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores, State residency
  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, Geographical residence, Talent/ability
  • Considered: Volunteer work, Work experience
  • Note: Test scores, GPA in required subjects most important. Personal statement VERY IMPORTANT.

accepted into Environmental Science - in state ?
1290 SAT
Lots of EC’s!
Also accepted SCU, St Mary’s, LMU, USF & Cal Poly
I think the essays are key!

I have similar top choices and admissions and I want to do environmental engineering too!! I wonder if we’ll go to the same school @calpolywannabe

my daughter was waitlisted for Environmental Science. We are so disappointed as this is where she most likely would have gone had she gotten in. My confusion is that I see other students that were accepted into the same 'major with stats quite a bit lower than hers. I read her essays and they were all well written, truthful and expressed the kind of person she is, that is the only reason I can think of that she wouldnt have gotten in.

She has a 4.12 gpa, 1430 SAT, 710 english, 730 math, 32 ACT, 4 years of marching band, 4 years of jazz band, leadership. The only other thing I can think of is that she only took 6 classes this senior year instead of 7 and only 2 AP classes along with Marching band, leadership, economics and Teachers Aide. I thought she had a good chance of getting into Cal Poly (still no determination which we assume is rejection) and Santa Cruz. I feel sad for all of these kids that work so hard in school, achieve good test scores and gpas and it isnt enough to be accepted as an in-state student to a UC or Cal Poly. She was accepted to University of Washington which is a great school, but we can’t afford $54,000/year.

sorry for the rant, I guess I am just disappointed. Looks like the honors program at San Diego State is where she will end up, which obviously is still great, but we were hoping for something in a smaller town since she has been in a small town in Northern California her whole life

@Drummer1030 I hope she gets in. I’m not too much aware of statistics of admitted students but it may be a case of over qualification. I would suggest sending an email to the admissions office to show willingness to attend the school if admitted.

@VPDad, thanks for the suggestion! It certainly couldn’t hurt!

@Drummer1030 SDSU is a great ?? option! These schools are all discussing and promoting that they are interested in the holistic student. It’s not all about the high gpa and test Scores anymore. They want to see kids that are well rounded and strong members of society. :relaxed: The essays need to tell a story of how the student has contributed and what kind of impact they have had on others.

@HLT1967 Thanks, San Diego is a great option, its just not where she felt the most comfortable, but I am thinking that being accepted into the Honors program will help because of the smaller class sizes.

I did think her essays were good, but I guess not good enough, they showed how she contributed to the community by volunteering to play the drums at local fundraisers and events, how she came in second place in the forestry challenge in El dorado County, that she tutored algebra to other students. I thought it was enough but I g, uess that others do more. Oh well, she is an amazing individual and student and I know she will do well wherever she goes. I think its just hard as the mom to see the disappointment in her eyes
