UC Santa Cruz and other UC's - Chance Me please :)

I am in my senior year this fall in the state of California and I'm filling out college apps. My primary interest is focused on UC's such as UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Davis, and UC San Diego. I want to major in Chemistry in college and maybe move on to medical or pharmacy school.

Here is what I have taken over the years and what I am currently taking this year:

Freshman Year:
English 1 - A/A
Geometry - B+/A
Advanced Concert Band - A/A
Biology - B/B+ (I had a horrible teacher)
Spanish 1 - A-/A+

Sophomore:
English 2 - A/A
Algebra 2 - A/A
Honors Concert Band - A/A
Chemistry - A+/A+
Honors World History - A-/A
Spanish 2 - A/A

Junior:
English 3 - A-/A
PreCalculus - A/A-
Honors Concert Band (Again) - A/A
AP Chemistry - A/A
AP US History - A-/A-
Spanish 3 - B+/B+ (Horrible Teacher)

The classes I'm taking for my Senior Year are as followed:
AP English
Statistics
Honors Concert Band (1 Semester only)
Jazz Ensemble (2 Semesters)
Health (1 Semester only)
Physics
AP Psychology (1 Semester only)
AP Economics (Second Semester only)

So according to the UC GPA Calculator only considering Sophomore and Junior year, my UC GPA is a 4.083.

Also, my class rank is 22 out of 353 students, giving my class rank being in the top 7% so I believe I qualify for ELC.

The one really iffy part about admission will likely be my SAT I scores. I took the SAT I in October and i got a 550 on Critical Reading, 620 on Math, and 570 on Writing. I understand that it is a little below the average combined SAT score for most UC's but oh well.

In addition, my Extracurricular Activities include active support and participation in my school Concert and Jazz Bands, California Scholarship Federation (CSF), I took part in both the LOCAL AND NATIONAL Chemistry Olympiad Exam Competition my Junior Year, and 80+ hours of Community Service but I plan on doing a few more band extracurricular/volunteer work to raise those community service hours up.

So, do I have a good chance of getting in?

Also, if anyone knows how the UC's calculate your chances of acceptance, please do tell

Much appreciated guys and gals!

Your GPA is great. Your SAT scores are not a little below average, they’re bad. And yes, UC’s will make the connection that you go to a school that inflates grades. However, you’re still good for Santa Cruz, by a longshot, because they weight GPA a lot more than they weight your SAT scores. I wouldn’t bother applying to Santa Barbara, Davis or San Diego though. Your SAT scores are about 300+ points below their averages.

harsh. but true. sorry poster dude but ur sat sucks and means u have rlly easy classes or u study too much.

I disagree with the above users. UCs judge your application as a whole; so as long as your personal statements and extracurricular activities are good, they can outweigh the low SAT score. If it makes you feel any better, my friend got into UCLA with a SAT score of 1550.

^ i don’t believe that. are you sure he didn’t mean 1550/1600?

Knowing him, yeah I’m pretty sure he got 1550/2400 (hes a freshman at UCLA right now so this is recent).

UCSD - reach
UCSB UCD UCI - high match (i know people with worse GPA’s and worse SAT’s that got in)
UCSC - match

You are well on your way to getting into the middle-tier UC’s (D, SB, I), you might want to take the December ACT/SAT to better your chances though. Good luck.

[UC Davis Profile - SAT Scores and Admissions Data for UC Davis](UC Davis: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA)

Your SAT already puts you somewhere near the 50% percentile for Davis, and your GPA is high so I highly suggest applying.

You’re bound to get into at least one of the UC’s…
See here: [University of California - Statewide path](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/freshman/california-residents/admissions-index/index.html)
“If you’re in the top 9 percent of California high school graduates and aren’t admitted to any of the UC campuses you apply to, you’ll be offered a spot at another campus if space is available. We use a formula — called an admissions index —to determine if you fall in that group.”

UCSD - reach
UCSB - match
UCD - high match
UCI - match
UCSC - high safety

UCSC really isn’t that far off from UCR selectivity.

in response to refreshe - they really need to release the 2011 stats for uc statfinder. it’s really mind boggling how some highly underachieving students manage to get into some of the UCs.
