I want to eventually go into advertising, so for a while I was toying with the idea of studying business. But I'm not into the math and accounting that goes along with it. So i decided I'd like to study communications. Does UC Santa Cruz have any type of communications program at all? I loved everything about the school, but don't know if it has what I want to study! Also, what other good communication schools are in cali?
Quick stats-
3.7 weighted gpa
1300 sats
sat IIs- 730 writing 660 math 600 lit
main activity- theater (since I was 9)
Thanks!

UC Santa Cruz does not offer a major in communication. UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, or UC San Diego would be your best bets in the UC system for a degree in communications. Outside of the UC system, several of the cal state schools have very good communications programs - look at San Diego State University, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Monterrey - you can find other cal states with communications programs at www.calstate.edu. In terms of private schools in California, the University of Southern California has one of the top ranked communications schools in the country, and it includes a program specifically focused on advertising. After USC, Pepperdine, Santa Clara University, University of Redlands, University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount, and Chapman University all have good communications programs.

However, it is not absolutely necessary to major in communications in order to work in advertising. Other majors that might lead to a career in advertising include English, creative writing, Film, Psychology, Business, and a host of other majors. The key, if you choose an alternate major, is to try to choose a school where you can do internships related to advertising and communications. That will help you get your foot in the door when you start looking for your first job.
