I know that in general, UC's are more theoretical, whereas Cal States are more practical, when it comes to engineering. But does anyone know which one UCSC is more of. Do they teach more practical/hands on or theoretical mechanical/electrical/robotics engineering

Thanks, any advice will help.

our son has been accepted by both UCSC and Cal Poly SLO (as well as U of Utah - Honors) and we have done online research - nothing from personal experience…

UCSC has a Robotics degree - pretty cool…as one of the few located anywhere, that will open up research opportunities. If you are one to self advocate, this could be pretty awesome and yet Cal Poly’s motto is ‘Learn by Doing’, thus Everyone there receives more practical engineering…something we know our son will respond to…

to him, he is really juiced by active involvement and would consider learning by doing more fun…I guess he wants to play in the labs…Both schools will provide a nice foundation for grad schools and employers…good luck!

another thought - the environments are different at both schools - yes both are somewhat beach towns but remember that SLO is definitely also an ‘Agg’ school and the students tend to be a little more conservative - UCSC offers a much more mellow crowd - perhaps a little reefer induced at that…

google ‘UCSC 4/20’ and you will understand…
