UC Santa Cruz or SF State?!?

I know UCSC is a better school then SFSU but i'v just heard sooooooooooooo many bad stuff about UCSC (even from their students)...

what do you think, SF State or UCSC? im trying to transfer to Berkeley or Davis or UCLA or Stanford in 2 years.. and i have a pre-med or bio or chem major (undecided yet).

im not into parties but i want it to be a nice hang out, community, chill place. and the academics have to be good also..

PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE!

no reply :(

*bump

First off, my son went to UCSC and really liked it. He didn’t like everything, it wasn’t perfect, but he learned a lot and made some great friends (graduated in June).

Secondly, if you are looking to transfer you should check out the transfer info on each school’s website (Cal, Davis and Ucla) if you look at Ucla you will find that they have a priority system where they will take qualified students FIRST from Community Colleges and SECOND from other UC’s.

If your desire to transfer is really strong, then I would go to the Community College, save yourself some money and transfer to the school of your dreams. BUT, be informed!!! Make sure you know exactly what the schools want!

Good luck.

Neither is a good choice for the schools you want to transfer to. A CCC would be best followed by choosing UCSC because it’s the better choice if you have to stay 4 years.

If your goal is to transfer, definitely look at Community College. At the very worst you’ll end up at UCSC in two years as a transfer student, which wouldn’t really have changed the situation. But assuming you do really well in Community College you could easily end up at a “better UC.” Although in all honesty if you’re worried about environment, student population, etc why would you have even applied to SC if you didn’t think it would fit your personality?
If your goal is to finish your undergrad at either one of the two institutions than choose Santa Cruz.

If you are trying to transfer, go to CC for sure.

Most people plan on transferring, but many do not end up doing so, because they actually like the place they end up at. I think that Cali kids really do not appreciate how good they have it. The entire UC system is excellent and the Cal State system provides so many opportunities. Every UC school outside of Merced is ranked in the top 100 nationally and some programs at UCR and UCSC are nationally ranked. Anyhow, I think you should go visit the campuses yourself. I personally would choose a UC over a CSU because of the greater amount of resources, but if finances are an issue that SFSU is a nice backup option.

Anyway, for premed or bio-chem I definitely would opt for UCSC.

thank you guys!.. i decided to do the whole CC 2 year transfer program :)

For what it’s worth, UCSC is gorgeous, and SF State is not so much.

Is that a guaranteed transfer offer to UCLA?

If not then this is just silly and a mistake in my opinion. You don’t pass on a UC school for a CC.

Especially if you are pre-med. I don’t think people realize the stigma that CC students have (and unfairly) get from graduate/professional programs.

Grad/Professional schools look at your entire 4 year record and CC will be held against you (whether people want to admit it or not). On the VERY slim chance you get into UCLA or Cal (Stanford is not going to happen)- the jump from CC to UCLA or Cal academically is enormous and an adjustment.

If you are planning to apply to med school your senior year, you will be applying to MED school with 2 or 3 yrs of CC under your belt and 1 year at UCLA or Cal. That is not going to be looked upon favorably AND does not give YOU time to adjust academically.

By the way, I say THREE yrs of CC because they are overloaded and its tough to get courses.

I think you are throwing away an opportunity at UCSC.
